본문: 여호수아 9:1-27
제목: 승리 후에 찾아오는 시험

사도 바울은 “서 있는 줄로 생각하는 사람은 넘어지지 않도록 주의하라.”(고전 10:12)고 경고했다. 그러나 한편으로 “사람에게 흔히 닥치는 시험 외에는 너희가 당한 것이 없나니 하나님께서는 신실하셔서 너희가 감당할 수 있는 것 이상으로 시험을 당하지 않게 하시고 시험을 당하면 피할 길도 마련하셔서 너희로 능히 감당케 하시느니라.”(고전 10:13)고 격려했다.
다윗 왕은 자신이 번영 가운데 말하기를 “내가 흔들리지 않으리라.”하였으나(시 30:6), 그가 실제로 번영 가운데 편안하게 되었을 때 그는 간음과 살인죄를 범하고 밤마다 침상을 적시는 회개를 하였다(시51편). 그리스도인들이 모든 일이 잘되고 편안할 때일수록 더욱 조심해야 함을 교훈적으로 보여주신다. 여호수아 같은 위대한 종도 큰 성공을 거둔 후 방심하였을 때 큰 실수를 하게 된 것을 본문을 통하여 본다.

     요단을 건너 여리고를 무너뜨리고 아이 성까지 정복한 여호수아에게 시험이 찾아왔던 것이다. 승리에 도취한 나머지 사단의 간교한 시험을 간과하면서 하나님께서 미리 명령하신 말씀을 잊음으로 인해 큰 실수를 하게 된 것이다. 하나님께서는 모세에게 미리 말씀하셨었다:“너는 네가 가는 그 땅의 거민들과 언약을 맺지 않도록 조심하라. 그래야 그것이 네 가운데 올무가 되지 않으리라.”(출 34:12)
기브온 거민들이 사신인 것처럼 꾸며 나귀에 낡은 자루와 찟어져 꿰맨 포도주 부대를 싣고 낡은 옷을 입고 마르고 곰팡이 난 빵을 예비하고 길갈에 있는 진영으로 여호수아를 찾아와서 화친을 청하며 조약을 맺으려 하면서 여호수아의 명성을 말하였을 때 주의 입에 조언을 구하지 않았다. 마침내 여호수아가 그들과 화친하고 그들을 살리라는 조약을 맺고 회중의 고관들이 그들에게 맹세까지 하였던 것이다.

     그들이 앞으로 정복할 성읍인 기브온과 브에롯과 키랏여아림의 거민인 줄 모르고 그들에게 주 하나님으로 맹세하였기 때문에 그들에게 손을 댈 수 없었던 것이다. 사도 야고보는 맹세에 대하여 엄히 경고했다:

“나의 형제들아, 무엇보다도 맹세하지 말라. 하늘로도 말고 땅으로도 말며, 어떤 다른 맹세로도 말지니라. 다만 너희는 ‘예’할 것은 ‘예’하고, ‘아니라’할 것은 ‘아니라’하여 정죄에 빠지지 않도록 하라.”(약 5:12)
이스라엘 회중이 그들에게 맹세한 고관들에게 불평하였을 때, 고관들이 회중에게 말했다:

“우리가 이스라엘의 주 하나님으로 그들에게 맹세하였도다. 그러므로 이제 우리가 그들을 손대서는 아니되리라. 우리가 그들에게 행할 것은 이것이니 우리가 그들을 살려줘야 하리라. 그래야 우리가 그들에게 서원한 맹세로 인한 진노가 그들에게 임하지 않으리라.”( 19-20절)

     전도서 기자는 하나님께 함부로 서원하지 않을 것을 경고했다:
“네가 하나님께 서원하면 갚는 것을 미루지 말라. 그는 어리석은 자들을 기뻐하지 않으시나니 네가 서원한 것을 갚으라. 네가 서원하고 갚지 않는 것보다 서원하지 않는것이 더 나으니라. 네 입으로 네 육체를 죄짓게 하지 말며, 너는 그 천사 앞에서 그것은 실수였다고 말하지 말라. 어찌하여 하나님께서 네 음성에 화내셔야 하며 네 손으로 한 일을 멸하셔야 하겠느냐? 꿈이 많고 말이 많은 데는 헛된 것들 또한 많도다. 그러나 너는 하나님을 두려워하라.”(전 5:4-7)

     여호수아와 회중의 고관들이 회중 앞에서 실수하였을 때 이스라엘의 남은 자들이 잠시 불평하였지만  하나님의 이름으로 맹세한 것은 지켜야 한다고 말했을 때 그들은 회중의 고관들에게 순종하는 것을 본다. 그러나 이집트에서 나왔던 대부분의 사람들은 모세를 돌로치려하면서 불평하다가 광야에서 모두 죽었던 것이다. 오늘날에도 교회의 지도자들이 본의 아니게 실수하여 그 피해가 그들에게 미친다 해서 지도자들을 원망할 것이 아니라 오히려 그들을 포용하고 그들과 더불어 함께 책임질 둘 아는 아량이 필요한 것이다. 그러므로 성도들은 그들을 위하여 더욱 기도하며 그들이 시험에 들지 않도록 중보해야 할 것이다. 비록 실수할 때에도 하나님께서 피할 길을 여심을 믿으며 계속해서 그들을 지원하며 동역해야 하는 것이다.

     하나님께서는 히위인들로 하여금 이스라엘 모든 회중을 위하여 나무패는 자와 물긷는 자가 되게 하셨다. 이것은 앞으로 이스라엘의 남은 자들이 환난 후에 천년왕국에 들어가게 될 때에 영광의 보좌에 읹으신 주님께서 양같은 민족을 살려주시는 일을 미리 보여주시는 것이다:

“인자가 그의 영광 중에 오고, 또 모든 거룩한 천사들이 그와 함께 오면 그때에 그가 그의 영광의 보좌에 앉으리니 그 앞에 모든 민족들을 모아놓고 마치 목자가 양들을 염소들에서 갈라놓듯이 그들을 따로 갈라놓으리라. 왕이 오른 편에 있는 사람들에게 말하기를 ‘오라, 내 아버지 의 복을 받은 자들아, 세상의 기초가 놓인 이래로 너희를 위하여 준비한 그 왕국을 이어받으라. 이는 내가 굶주렸을 때에 너희가 먹을 것을 주었으며, 내가 목마를 때에 마실 것을 주었도다. 내가 나그네였을 때에 대접하였고 또 내가 헐벗었을 때에 입혀주었으며, 내가 병들었을 때에 문안해 주었고, 내가 감옥에 갇혔을 때에 찾아와 주었도다.’ 하리라.”(마 25:31-34)

     환난 때에 나타나는 하나님의 능력을 보면서 동시에 이스라엘의 남은 자들을 하나님께서 어떻게 독수리의 날개로 인도하심을 보면서 이스라엘 백성들에게 은혜를 베푸는 이방인로 하여금 천년왕국에 들어갈 자격을 주실 것이다. 이스라엘 민족은 제사장 민족으로 온 땅을 다스리며 그들을 따르던 이방인들은 그들 아래에서 봉사하면서 살 것을 보여주시는 것이다. 히위족속들은 하나님께서 가나안을 차지하라는 명령을 기억하면서 자신들의 생명을 잃을까 두려워워 여호수아를 속였던 것이다. 그들은 하나님의 능력을 믿었던 것이다. 마치 라합이 이스라엘과 함께 하시는 하나님의 소문을 듣고 정탐꾼을 영접함으로써 구원을 받은  것이나 똑같은 것이다. 이와 같이 복음은 믿는 사람을 구원에 이르게 하는 하나님의 능력인 것이다(롬 1:16). 그러므로 모든 성도들은 누구나 복음을 증거하는 일에 앞장서야 하는 것이다.
오늘날에도 이스라엘 백성들을 축복하는 나라들을 축복하시고 저주하는 나라들을 저주하심을 분명하게 볼 수 있는 것이다. 하나님께서 아브라함에게 “너를 축복하는 자들에게 내가 복을 주고 너를 저주하는 자를 저주하리라. 네 안에서 땅의 모든 족속들이 복을 받을 것이라.”(창 12:3) 말씀하신 약속을 하나님께서는 지금까지, 그리고 영원토록 지키시는 것을 기억해야 할 것이다.
금년 11월부터 예루살렘에서 라디오 High Adventure 방송국의 Voice of Hope를 통하여 “광야에서 외치는 자의 소리”의 복음을 전할 때 온 예루살렘 거민들로 하여금 “주 너희 하나님을 보라!”는 복음을 통하여 그들이 다시 오시는 이슈아(예수)가 진정으로 그들의 하나님인 것을 깨닫게 할 때 그들을 진정으로 축복하게 되는 것이다. 이 사역에 모두 동참함으로써 우리에게 주신 축복의 기회를 받아들이지 않겠는가? 할렐루야!

Subject: Temptation followed by victory
Apostle Paul warned to the saints of Corinthians saying,
“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”(1Cor. 10:12) On the other hand, he encouraged them saying,”There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”(1Cor. 10:13)
King David said in his prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”(Ps 30:6) But when he was in prosperity, he committed adultery and murder; he had to repent his sins wetting his bed with his tears every night (Ps 51). This shows us a very important teaching for us to be alert in prosperity. Even Joshua, the great servant of God took a mistake when he was in the absence of mind after a great victory.

     After they destroyed Jericho, and conquered Ai, Joshua was involved with temptation. Being fascinated with victory and overlooking the cunning temptation of the Satan, they forgot the spoken word of God to be ended up with a big mistake. LORD God had spoken to Moses earlier:
“Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee :”( ex 34:12)

     The inhabitant of Gibeon did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up: And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal. Speaking about the reputation of Joshua, they asked him peace making a league with him. Joshua didn’t ask counsel at the mouth of the LORD. Finally, Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and princes of the congregation swore unto them.

     Not knowing them the inhabitants of Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beereth, and Kirjathjearim, they swore unto them by the lord God; so they might not touch them. Apostle James warned the saints not to swear:

“But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.”(James 5:12)

     When all the congregation murmured against the princes, all the princes said unto all the congregation: 
 ” We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. “(vss 19-20)
    The writer of Ecclesiastes warned not to make vows unto God:
“When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.”(Eccl. 5:4-7)
     When Joshua did wrong with the princes of Israel, the remnant of Israel murmured for a moment, but they obeyed Joshua and the princes when they said, they had sworn unto them by the LORD God. But the most of them that came out of Egypt murmured all the time, and tried to stone Moses; they all died in the wilderness. Nowadays, the leaders of the church could make mistake not on purpose to bringing forth something harm. The congregation of church had better show generosity unto them instead of murmuring and fighting, and embraces the responsibility. Therefore the saints should pray for them and intercede for them not to be in temptation. Believing the faithfulness of God making the way to escape, they should continue to support the leaders of church.
LORD God made Hivites be the hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes has promised them. This shows in advance the nations of Gentiles as sheep saved by the Lord Jesus, when he sits upon the throne of his glory after the Great Tribulation:     “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:”(Matt. 25:31-34)
     Seeing the power of LORD God revealed in the Great Tribulation, and also seeing how the LORD God guide the Israel on the wing of the eagle, the nations that stretch their hand to help the remnant of Israel shall have the right to enter the Millennium of Christ. Israel shall be the nation of priest ruling the earth, and the Gentile nations shall serve the Israel. Hivites remembered the covenant of God for the Israel to occupy Canaan, and they deceived Joshua being afraid of their lives; they believed in the power of LORD God as if Rahab heard the report of the LORD God being with Israel, and hid the spies of Israel to be saved. Yes! The gospel of Christ is the power of God that gives salvation unto them that believe (Rom. 1:16).  Therefore all the saints have to do beat to preach the gospel.
Even nowadays, God want to bless the nations that bless the people of Israel, and curse one that curse Israel; The LORD God has been keeping his covenant given unto Abram until now and forever saying, “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”(Gen. 12:3)
We are to bless the Israel preaching the gospel in Jerusalem through the radio station of “High Adventure”. We are going to preach the gospel to Jerusalem asking them to behold your God “Ishua” coming King as a voice of the wilderness and the voice of hope. What about all of you participate in this ministry to have blessing promised by the Lord God! Hallelujah!
