제목: 남은 자들을 위한 약속의 말씀

사도 바울은 그리스도인들이 믿음으로 의롭게 되어 광야같은 세상을 살아가는 동안 하나님과 화평을 가지며 하나님의 영광의 소망, 다시 말해서 영광의 주님이 다시 오시는 소망 안에서 즐거워한다고 증거했다. 뿐만 아니라 환난 중에서도 즐거워할 수 있는 바, 그 이유에 대하여 환난은 인내를 이루고 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이룬다고 증거했다. 그 소망이 부끄럽지 않은 것은 하나님의 사랑이 성령에 의하여 마음 속에 부은 바 됨이라고 또한 증거했다 (롬 5:1-5)

     이집트를 떠나 사십 년 간 광야 생활을 통하여 연단받은 이스라엘 백성들의 남은 자들은 꿈에 그리던 약속의 땅을 바라보게 되었다. 주의 종 모세는 자신이 바라보던 약속의 땅에 백성들을 이끌고 들어갈 여호수아에게 안수하였고, 그는 지혜의 영으로 충만하게 되었다(신 34:9). 이집트를 떠날 때 보행하는 남자만 육십만이었지만 여호수아와 갈렙 외에는 그들 중 한 사람도 살아남지 못하고 광야에서 모두 쓰러져 죽었다. 하나님께서는 남은 자들을 가나안 땅으로 인도하시기 위하여 모세의 종 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다.

     하나님께서는 여호수아를 “하나님의 일꾼”이 아닌 “모세의 일꾼”이라고 말씀하셨다. 여호수아는 하나님의 종인 모세의 말에 단 한 번도 거역하거나 비판한 적이 없는 신실한 일꾼이었다. 그는 하나님께서 정하신 영적인 질서를 철저하게 지켰던 겸손한 종이었다. 다시 말해서 그는 하나님을 두려워했기에 하나님의 종 모세를 하나님처럼 섬겼던 것이다. 오늘날에도 하나님께서는 하나님의 교회 안에 사도, 선지자, 복음전도자, 목사와 교사를 주심으로써 영적인 질서를 만드시고 말씀 안에서 그 질서에 순종함으로써 하나님의 사역을 수행하도록 하신 것이다 (엡 4:11).
이제 이스라엘 백성들 앞에는 요단 강이 놓여있다. 그러나 여호수아는 하나님께서 홍해 바다를 가르시고 백성들이 마른 땅을 통과하게 하신 기적을 이미 보았다. 하나님께서는 여호수아에게   “내 종 모세가 죽었으니, 이제 너와 이 모든 백성은 일어나 이 요단을 건너 내가 그들, 즉 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 그 땅으로 가라.”(2절)고 명령하셨다. 그들에게는 배 한 척도 없었다. 또한 그들은 광야 생활을 통해 지쳐있었다. 또한 요단 건녀 편 땅에는 그들 보다 강한 일곱 족속이 살고 있었다. 또한 그들은 견고한 성 여리고를 통과해야 했다. 그들에게 있는 것이라고는 오직 약속의 말씀 뿐이이었다: “너희의 발바닥으로 밟는 모든 곳은 내가 너희에게 준 것이라.” “광야와 이 레바논에서부터 큰 강 유프라데스 강에 이르는 힛인의 온 땅과 해 지는 편 큰 바다에 이르기까지 너희의 지경이 되리라.” “네 평생에 네 앞에 설 자가 아무도 없으리라.” “내가 너를 단념하지 아니하고 버리지 아니하리라.”
하나님께서 말씀을 주신 후에 그들이 할 일에 대해 명령하셨다: “강건하고(Be strong) 담대하라(Be of good courage).”모든 율법대로 지켜 행하고 좌로나 우로나 돌이키지 말라.” “율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 않게 하고 주야로 묵상하며 행하라.””무서워 말고 낙심치 말라.” 그들이 이 명령대로 행할 때 그들 조상에게 약속한 땅을 유업으로 받을것이며, 어디로 가든지 번영할 것이며, 좋은 성공을 이룰 것이며 주 하나님께서 그들이 어디로 가든지 함께 할 것이라는 약속을 주셨다. “강건하고 담대하라.” “오직 강건하고 담대하라.” “강건하고 담대라. 무서워하지 말고 낙심치 말라.”고 세 번에 걸쳐 말씀하셨다.

     이스라엘 백성들 가운데 하나님을 믿지 않았던 다수의 사람들은 그들의 불신으로 인하여 하나님께서 약속하신 땅에 들어가지 못했다. 오늘날에도 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 은혜로 하나님의 자녀가 되었을지라도 광야같은 세상을 살면서 하나님께 대한 믿음을 끝까지 지킨 자들에게 유업의 보상이 있는 것이다. 사도 바울은 이에 대하여 분명하게 증거했다:“그러나 믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없나니, 하나님께 나아가는 자는 그분이 존재하는 것과 그분이 자기를 열심히 찾는 자들에게 보상하는 분이심을 마땅히 믿어야 하느니라.”(히 11:6)
하나님을 열심으로 찾는 자들은 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 사람들이다. 에녹은 하나님과 300년 동안 동행하다가 죽음을 보지 않고 하늘로 옮겨졌다. 그는 들림받기 전에 하나님을 기쁘시게하였다는 이 증거를 가지고 있었다. 우리 모두는 이 소망 속에 살면서 믿음 안에 강건하고 담대하게 주님과 동행하는 삶을 살아야 할 것이다.

     하나님께서 그들에게 주신 약속을 우리에게도 주신 사실을 잊지 말아야 할 것이다. 믿음으로 난 사람은 믿음이 있는 아브라함과 더불어 복을 받는다고 사도 바울이 증거했다 (갈 3:9). 오늘날 우리들에게는 성령 하나님께서 사도들을 통하여 말씀하셨다. 우리들도 우리가 복음을 가지고 밟는 땅을 주신다는 약속을 주신 것이다. 주님께서 므나 비유를 통하여 구체적으로 우리에게 말씀하셨다 (눅 19:12-27).
하나님의 말씀을 받은 여호수아는 이제 이스라엘 관원들에게 그들이 행할 것들에 관해 명령했다. 이스라엘의 남은 자들은 여호수아의 명령에 대해 믿음으로 화답했다:
“당신이 우리에게 명령하신 모든 것을 우리가 행하고 당신이 우리를 어디로 보내든지 우리가 가리이다….누구든지 당신의 명령을 거역하고 당신이 명령한 모든 일에서 당신의 말에 경청하지 아니하면 그는 사형에 처하리니, 오직 강건하시고 담대하소서.”(16,18절)
그들은 여호수아의 명령이 하나님의 말씀에서 온 것을 확신하였기에 그의 명령에 복종하기로 결단한 것이다. 하나님의 교회는 머리이신 주님의 말씀 아래 연합한 그리스도의 몸이다. 말씀 아래 연합할 때 요단 강을 건너 여리고를 무너뜨리고 약속의 땅으로 들어갈 수 있는 것이다.

주님께서도 이 세상을 떠나시기 얼마 전에 제자들에게 당부하셨다:“세상에서는 너희가 환난을 당할 것이나 기운을 내라 (Be of good cheer) 내가 세상을 이겼노라.”
사도 요한은 우리가 강건하고 담대하여야 할 것에 대해 “어린 자녀들아, 너희는 하나님께 속하였고 또 그들을 이겼으니, 이는 너희 안에 계신 분이 세상에 있는 자보다 크시기 때문이라.”(요일 4:4)고 격려했다.
우리 앞에 놓여있는 요단 같은 장애물을 믿음으로 통과할 준비를 하자! 하나님께서 주신 약속의 말씀을 붙들고 어려움 가운데 발을 디딛자! 어리석은 생각에서 나오는 불평을 버리고 믿음 안에서 강건하고 선한 용기를 가지고 담대하자!  주님께서 예비하신 유업을 바라보며 소망 속에서 즐거워하자! 주님께서 함께 하신다! 악을 두려워하지 말자!

Subject: The word of promise unto the Remnant
Apostle Paul testified: The Christian being justified by faith has peace with God living as the wilderness; and they also rejoice in the hope of the glory of God when he comes again. And not only so, but they glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worked patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.  And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us (Rom. 5:1-5)

     Finally, the people of Israel were looking forward the Promised Land after they had been tried in the wilderness for forty years. Moses the servant of the LORD laid his hands upon Joshua who was to guide the Remnant to the Promised Land: and He was filled with the spirit of wisdom (Deut. 34:9).  The number of the young men was six hundred thousand when  they were leaving Egypt, but all of them except Joshua and Caleb died in the wilderness. Then God spoke to Joshua, the servant of Moses  to take the Remnant to the Canaan.

     God called Joshua as the servant of Moses instead of the servant of God. Joshua was the faithful servant of Moses who had never against Moses and criticized him. He was so humble, and he observed the spiritual order. He feared God, and he served Moses, the servant of God as God. God has made the spiritual order in the church of God giving apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers so that the church may be able to do the ministry obeying the spiritual order in the word of God (Eph. 4:11).
Now the people of Israel arrived at the river of Jordan. Joshua already saw the miracle of God dividing the Red Sea for the Israel to cross the sea on the dry land. God commanded to Joshua, “2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.”
There was no boat at all for them, and they were exhausted passing through the wilderness. There were living seven tribes much stronger than them in the land beyond Jordan. And they had to pass through Jericho. Only thing that they had was the promised word of God: “3Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon.”    “4From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.”   “5There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life.”  “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

     After God gave them the word, and commanded them what to do: “Be strong and of a good courage.”  “Thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left.” “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night,”  “Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed.”
When they obeyed theses words, they were to receive the Promised Land given to their fathers as the inheritance; and to be prosper wherever they might go; and to have good success; and the LORD God was to be with them wherever they might go. LORD God repeated three times saying, “6Be strong and of a good courage.”  “7Only be thou strong and very courageous.”  “Be strong and of a good courage.”

     The majority of the Israel couldn’t enter into the Promised Land because of their unfaith. Even in this age, the reward of the inheritance is given to them that keep the faith unto God to the end passing through the world as the wilderness.  Apostle Paul testified of this very clearly: “6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”(Heb 11:6)
They that diligently seek God please him. Enoch walk with God three hundred years; and by faith he was translated that he should not see death. Before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. We are supposed to have this hope as Enoch; and walk with the Lord to please him being strong in faith and of good courage.
God has given us the same promise as he had given unto them. Apostle Paul testified, they which are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham (Gal. 3:9).  Nowadays, the Holy Ghost spoke to us through the Apostles. Every place that the sole of our foot shall tread upon shall be ours in the future. This promise was given by the Lord Jesus through the parable of MINA (POUND) (Luke 19:12-27)

     Joshua commanded the officers of the people what to do after he received the word of God. They answered him by faith: “All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go….18Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.”(vss16, 18)
They were convinced of the commandment of Joshua from God, and ready to obey his word. The church is the body of Christ united under the word of the Lord, the head of the church. Being united under the word of God, we could cross the Jordan, and destroy the Jericho, and enter unto the Promised Land.
Lord Jesus encouraged the disciples before he left the world: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”(John 16:33)
Apostle John also encouraged the saints:  “ 4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”(1John 4:4)
Let us be prepared to pass through the obstacles as Jordan by faith! Let us step on trusting in the word of promise in the midst of afflictions! Casting out the murmuring coming out of stubborn thoughts, let us be strong in faith, and of good courage! Looking forward the inheritance prepared by the Lord for us, let us rejoice in the hope! Lord Jesus shall be with us! Let us not fear the evil!
