성시: 시편 16:1-11

본문: 누가복음 10:38-42

제목: 필요한 한 가지

     꼭 필요한 한 가지 일을 하지 않고 아무리 많은 일을 한다해도 그 일은 실패로 돌아갈 수 밖에 없을 것이다. 예수께서 마르다의 초정을 받아 그 집을 방문하셨을 때 하신 말씀 가운데 우리에게 주시는 아주 중요한 메시지가 있다.

     예수께서 그 집에 앉으셨을 때 마르다는 음식 준비로 경황이 없었고 동생 마리아는 예수의 발 앞에 앉아서 주의 말씀을 듣고 있었다. 동생을 못마땅하게 여긴 마르다는 동생이 자기를 돕지 않고 있는 것을 못마땅하게 여긴 나머지 주님께 화를 내면서 마리아로 하여금 자신을 돕도록 내 보내달라고 요청했다. 다시 말해서 주님께서 말씀하시지 않으시면 내 동생이 자기를 도울텐데 주님때문에 자기 혼자만 고생하다고 불평한 것이다.

    이때 주님께서는 마르다를 두 번 부르시면서 말씀하셨다. “네가 많은 일로 염려하여 수고하고 있으나 필요한 것은 한 가지뿐이니라. 마리아는 이 좋은 편을 택하였으니 그녀에게서 그것을 빼앗지 못하리라.”(41-42절)

다시 말해서 가장 좋고 필요한 일은 주님의 말씀을 듣고 진리를 깨닫는 것이며 그 깨달음을 아무도 빼앗을 수 없다는 사실을 마르다에게 말씀하셨던 것이다. 그러나 마르다는 주님의 말씀을 알아들을 수 없었던 것이다. 그러면 마리아가 얻은 가장 좋고 필요한 한 가지가 무엇이었을까? 사도 요한은 이에 대하여 증거하였다.

     유월절 엿새 전에 예수께서 베다니에 오셨을 때 다시 나사로의 집을 찾으셨다. 이때에도 마르다는 음식 시중을 들고 나사로는 주와 함께 식탁에 읹아있었다. 이때에 마리아가 매우 값진 감송 향유 한 리트라를 가지고 와서 예수의 발에 붓고 자기의 머리카락으로 그의 발을 닦으니, 그 집이 향유 냄새로 가득하게 되었다고 증거했다. 그렇다! 마리아는 전에 예수께서 집에 오셨을 때 주님께서 조만간 자신의 죄를 위하여 십자가에서 죽으셔야 함을 깨닫게 되었던 것이다. 주님께서 붙잡히시기 전 엿새 전에 자신의 집을 다시 방문하셨을 때 가장 좋고 가장 필요한 일을 행했던 것이다 (요 12:1-3). 주님의 장례를 위하여 그가 가졌던 전 재산을 가지고 주님을 섬겼다. 그는 기회를 놓치지 않고 믿음으로 행했던 것이다.

     이때에 주님을 배반할 자인 이스카리옷이 말하기를 “어찌하여 이 향유를 삼백 데나리온에 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 주지 아니하였느냐?”고 그녀를 책망했다. 다른 제자들까지도 마리아를 책망했다. 이때에 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “그녀를 가만 두어라. 그녀는 나의 장례 날을 위하여 이것을 간직해 둔 것이라. 가난한 사람들은 항상 너희와 함께 있으나 나는 너희와 항상 함께 있지 아니하느니라. 어찌하여 너희들이 이 여인을 괴롭히느냐? 이 여인은 나를 위하여 좋은 일을 하였노라…진실로 내가 너희에게 말하노니, 온 세상에 이 복음이 전파되는 곳마다 이 여인이 행한 이 일도 말하여 그녀를 기념하리라.”(요 12:7-8; 마 26:10,13)

     항상 주님의 말씀듣기를 사모하였던 마리아는 주님께서 자신을 포함하여 모든 사람의 죄를 위하여 죽으셔야 함과 장사지낸 후 셋째 날에 살아나실 것을 미리 알았던 것이다. 또한 다윗의 입을 통하여 주님의 몸이 썩지 않을 것도 미리 알았던 것이다 (행 2:27,시 16:10):

“이는 주께서 내 혼을 지옥에 버려 두지 아니하시며 주의 거룩하신 분으로 썩어짐을 보지 않게 하실 것임이니이다.”(시 16:10)

주의 첫날 즉 셋째 날 새벽에 마리아는 주님의 무덤 밖에서 울고 있다가 주님을 만났을 때 주님께서 말씀하셨다: “마리아야, 나를 만지지 말라. 내가 아직 내 아버지께로 올라가지 아니하였노라. 그러나 내 형제들에게 가서 내가 나의 아버지, 곧 너희 아버지, 또 나의 하나님, 곧 너희 하나님께로 올라간다고 말하라.”(요 20:17)

다른 여인들도 향료를 가지고 무덤에 왔지만 그들은 부활하신 주님을 만날 수 없었다. 그들의 향료는 더 이상 필요없게 된 것이다. 때를 놓친 것이다(눅 24:1)

    그렇다! 지금도 복음이 전파되는 곳마다 마리아가 행한 일도 함께 증거되고 있다. “성경대로 그리스도께서 우리의 죄들로 인하여 장사되셨다가  성경대로 셋째 날에 다시 살아나시어"”고전 15:3-4) “장사되셨다가”라는 말이 복음에 포함된 것은 성령께서 마리아가 행한 일을 말하여 그녀를 기념하리라는 주님의 말씀을 이루려 하심인 것이다.

     그렇다면, 주님께서 승천하신 후 성령께서 이 땅에 계신 동안 우리에게 가장 필요한 한 가지 좋은 것은 무엇인가?  우리는 마르다처럼 많은 일에 분주하게 지내고 있는가? 아니면 마리아처럼 주님 앞에 않아 그분의 말씀을 듣고 있는가? 그렇다면 주님께서 하신 말씀 가운데 가장 필요한 한 가지가 무엇인지 깨닫고 행하고 있는가? 아니면 마르다처럼 분주하지도 않고 마리아처럼 주님의 말씀도 듣지 않고 그럭저럭 지내면서 시간만 죽이고 있는가? 주님은 더이상 죽지 않으신다. 주님의 몸에 향유를 부을 일은 더군다나 없다. 그러나 부활하신 주님은 조만간 이 땅에 다시 오실 것이다. 그렇다면 다시 오실 주님을 만날 준비를 하고 있는가? 어떤 준비를 하고 있는가? 사도 요한은 이 한 가지 필요한 일에 대하여 증거했다:

“사랑하는 자들아, 이제는 우리가 하나님의 아들들이라. 우리가 어떻게 될 것인가는 아직 나타나지 아니하였으나 그가 나타나시면 우리가 그와 같이 되리라는 것을 아노니, 이는 우리가 그분 그대로 볼 것이기 때문이라. 그분 안에서 이 소망을 가지는 사람은 누구나 그분이 정결하신 것처럼 자신을 정결케 하느니라.”(요일 3:2-3)

     어떻게 자신을 정결케 할 것인가? 주님께서는 마지막 기도하실 때 “아버지의 진리로 그들을 거룩하게 하여 주옵소서. 아버지의 말씀은 진리니이다.”(요 17:17)라고 말씀하셨다. 그렇다! 이제 우리는 기록된 진리의 말씀 앞에 앉아 그 말씀을 들어야 할 것이다. 이때에 우리도 마리아처럼 한 가지 필요한 좋은 것을 깨닫고 행함으로써 영원한 축복에 동참하게 될 것이다.

    주님께서 뒤늦게 깨달은 열한 제자들에게 마지막으로 명령하셨다: “그러므로 너희는 가서 민족들을 가르치고, 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 침례를 주며 내가 너희에게 명령한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라. 보라, 내가 세상 끝까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라.”(마 28:19-20)

“그러므로”라는 한 마디 말씀 속에서 주님께서는 제자들에게 하신 말씀들을 다시 한 번 상기시키시는 것을 알 수 있다. 모든 민족에게 복음에 전퍼된 후에 그 민족들을 하나님의 왕국에 초청하시기 위하여 다시 오실 것을 재차 강조하신 것을 알 수 있는 것이다. 성령께서 이 세상에 계시는 동안 그리스도를 증거하지 못하면 영원히 기회를 잃게 되는 것이다. 마리아처럼 기회를 잃지 않기 위하여 성령께서 기록하신 주님의 말씀에 경청하여 마리아처럼 각자에게 주신 일을 위하여 모든 것을 붓지 않겠는가? 할렐루야!

Meditation: Psalms 16:1-11

Subject: One thing that is needed

      Even though many things are done without doing one thing that is necessary everything shall be in vain after all. There is a very important message in the word of Jesus when he was invited by Martha.

     Martha was so busy preparing food for Jesus when he was sitting at her house; Mary was sitting at Jesus feet, and heard his word. Martha felt so sorry for her sister, Mary for she was not helping her; and she blamed the Lord saying, does not care that my sister has left her to serve alone? In other word, she tried to stop the Lord to say his word to her sister with murmuring.

     Then, Jesus called the name of Martha twice, and said unto her,

“   Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:  ⁴²But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”(Luke 10:41-42)

In other word, the best thing needed for her is to hear the word of the Lord and understand the truth; and it cannot be taken away at all. But Martha couldn’t understand his word. Then what was the best and necessary thing that was taken by Mary? Apostle John testified of this.

    Jesus six days before the Passover came to Bethany to visit the house of Lazarus. Martha served him again; and Lazarus was sitting at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled the odour of the ointment. Yes! Mary must have understood, Jesus was going to die on the cross for her sins sooner or later when he visited her house before. So she did the best and needed thing unto Jesus when he was visiting six days again before he was to be arrested (John 12:1-3). She served the Lord with all her possession for his funeral not to miss the opportunity.

     Then said one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot which should betray him, ^“Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?” Even other disciples joined with him to rebuke her. Then Jesus said,

“^Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.  ⁸For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. …Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me… ¹³Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.”(John 12:7-8; Matt 26:10, 13)

     The words of the Lord must have given understanding unto Mary that the Lord had to die the sins of all men including her; and he shall be rising again the third day after his burial; and even the body of the Lord should not be corrupted in the grave as said by David (Acts 2:27; Ps 16:10):

   “¹⁰For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.”(Ps 16:10)

     Mary stood outside of the tomb of Jesus weeping at the dawn the first day of the week, the third day; Then Jesus said unto her,  “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.”(John 20:17)

Other women also brought the ointment to the tomb of Jesus; they couldn’t see the Lord. Their ointment was not needed any more; they missed the opportunity to serve the Lord with it (Luke 24:1)

      As the Lord said, wheresoever the gospel is preached, the thing that Mary had done be told for a memorial of her.

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; ⁴And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”(1Cor. 15:3-4)  The reason why the word “Buried” is included in the gospel of Christ is to achieve the word of the Lord to memorize the thing that was done by Mary.

     Then what is the best and needed thing for us while te Holy Ghost has been among us since the Lord Jesus was lifted to heaven? Are we so troubles about many things as Martha did? Or are we hearing the word of the Lord sitting at his feet? Then do we also understand what is the best thing needed for us to do? Or are we killing time not doing anything? Lord Jesus shall not die anymore again. His body never need the ointment for burial anymore either. Lord Jesus of resurrection shall come again to the earth. Then are we preparing to meet him? How are we preparing to see him? Apostle John testified of the one thing needed:

 “²Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  ³And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. “(1John 3:2-3)

     How can we purify ourselves? Jesus said to the Father in his final prayer, “17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”(John 17:17)   Yes! We have to hear the word of the Lord sitting at the written word of truth. Then we shall understand the best thing needed as Mary did to be blessed doing it, and participate in the eternal blessing.

     Lord Jesus commanded to his eleven disciples who understood the truth later on: “ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  ²Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”(Matt. 28:19-20)

     In the word “therefore”, Lord Jesus must have reminded them of what he had taught them again. He emphasized again the kingdom of God for all the nations after the gospel are preached unto them. If we fail to preach the gospel while the Holy Spirit stays in the earth, we shall lose the opportunity forever. What about hearkening to the words of God as Mary not losing the opportunity, but to pour all our possession unto his ministry according to the job given to each of us? Hallelujah!
