굼주의 묵상: 요나 2;1-10

본문: 마태복음 12:38-42

제목: 악하고 음란한 세대가 구하는 표적과 요나의 표적

       유대인들은 눈에 보이는 표적, 즉 기적을 보기를 원하는 민족이다. 그러나 시간이 지나가면 그들은 그들이 본 표적들을 잊어버리고 보이는 우상들을 쫓아간 민족이다. 그들이 이집트에서 혹독한 노예 생활로 인하여 하나님께 부르짖는 소리를 들으시고 모세와 아론을 보내셔서 열 가지 재앙을 그들의 목전에서 이집트 사람들에게 내리신 것을 그들의 눈으로 보았다. 뿐만 아니라 그들 앞에서 홍해를 가르시어 그들로 하여금 마른 땅으로 걸어서 홍해를 통과하게 하셨고, 홍해를 다시 합하심으로 파라오의 군대를 한 사람도 남김 없이 수장시키신 하나님의 기적도 보았다. 뿐만 아니라 광야에서 반석을 쳐서 물이 강물처럼 흘러나오게 하셨으며 하늘에서 만나와 메추라기들을 내려주셨다. 사십 년 동안 그들의 옷도 낡아지지 않게 하셨고 그들의 신도 발에서 낡아지지 않게 하셨다(신 29:5) 이것으로 충분하지 않았던가? 미국 사람들은 이런 경우에 “Enough is enough!”라고 말한다.

      이스라엘 백성들이 가나안 땅에 들어간 후에 그들이 본 하나님의 표적들을 모두 잊어버리고 우상숭배와 음행과 자신들의 이들들과 딸들을 우상의 제물로 드리는 일을 왕들과 모든 백성들이 끊임없이 자행하고 있을 때  하나님께서 선지자들을 보내시어 심판의 메세지를 주셨지만 그들의 음성에 경청하지 않다가 결국 그들은 하나님께서 보내신 바벨론을 비롯한 이방 나라들에 의하여 멸망당하고 나라의 주권을 상실하게 되었던 것이다. 그들은 우상들이 속이는 표적들을 보고 우상을들을 섬길 때마다 음행이 항상 그 뒤를 따랐던 것이다.

      그럼에도 본문에서 예수님 당시 로마의 통치 하에 있는 유대인의 지도자들이라는 바리새인들과 서기관들 몇 사람이 예수님께 니아와서 표적을 보여달라고 말한다. 이때에 주님께서는 “악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구한다.”고 그들을 질책하시면서 그들에게 필요한 표적 하나를 말씀하신다. 다시 말해서 요나의 표적을 깨닫지 못하면 그들은 영원히 악하고 음란한 세대가 되어 지옥에서 멸망당할 것을 경고하신 것이다. 그렇다면 주님께서 그들에게 주신 표적은 무슨 의미를 갖고 있는가? “요나가 사흘 낮과 밤을 고래 뱃속에 있었듯이, 인자도 그처럼 사흘 낮과 밤을 땅의 심장 속에 있을 것이라.”(40절)

주님께서는 앞으로 전파될 그리스도의 복음을 믿어야만 모든 죄악과 음란함이 해결될 것을 말씀하신 것이 아닌가? 사도 바울은 이 요나의 표적을 “그리스도의 복음”이라고 명명했고 이 복음은 맏는 유대인이나 이방인 모두를 구원에 이르게 하는 하나님의 능력이라고 증거했던 것이다(롬 1:16). 사도 바울은 이 요나의 표적이 세상 모든 사람들을 위한 복된 소식임을 증거하면서 “성경대로 그리스도께서 우리의 죄들로 인하여 죽으시고 장사되셨다가 성경대로 셋째 날에 다시 살아나셔서”(고전 15:3,4)라고 증거한 것이다.

      본문에서 예수님께서 말씀하신 요나의 표적을 깨달은 사도 바울은 요나처럼 복음을 전파하면서 “십자가를 전파하는 것이 멸망하는 자들에게는 어리석은 것이지만 구원을 받은 우리들에게는 하나님의 능력이라. 기록되기를 ‘내가 지혜있는 자들의 지혜를 멸하고 총명한 자들의 명철을 없애리라.’ 하였느니라. 지헤있는 자가 어디 있느냐? 학자가 어디 있느냐? 이 세상의 변론가가 어디 있느냐?  하나님께서 이 세상의 지혜를 어리석게 만드신 것이 아니냐? 하나님의 지혜에 있어서는 세상이 그 지혜로 하나님을 알지 못하였기에 하나님께서 복음 전파의 어리석음으로 믿는 자들을 구원하시기를 기뻐하셨느니라.”(고전 1:18-21)

사도바울은 헛된 지혜를 구하는 사람들을 향하여, “유대인들은 표적을 구하고 헬라인들은 지혜를 찾지만 우리는 십자가에 못박히신 그리스도를 전파하노니 이것이 유대인들에게는 거치는 것이 되고 헬라인들에게는 어리석은 것이 되지만 부르심을 입은 사람들에게는, 유대인들에게나 헬라인들에게나, 그리스도는 하나님의 능력이요, 또 하나님의 지혜니라. 이는 하나님의 어리삭음이 사람들보다 더 지혜롭고 하나님의 연약함이 사람들보다 더 강하기 때문이라.”(고전 1:22-25)고 증거했다.

     수천년 전에 요나가 제비뽑기로 함께 배에 탓던 모든 사람들을 대신하여  바닷 속으로 던져져서 고래 뱃 속에서 사흘 밤과 사흘 낮 동안 있으면서 “내가 지옥의 뱃속으로부터 부르짖엇더니 주께서 내 음성을 들으셨나이다….내가 산들의 밑바닥까지 내려갔더니 땅이 그 빛장들로 영원토록 나를 막았나이다. 그러나 오 주 나의 하나님이여, 주께서 내 생명을 부패함에서 건져내셨나이다.”(욘 2:2, 6)라고 부르짖었다. 예수 그리스도께서도 이 지상에 있는 악하고 음란한 모든 사람들의 죄를 위하여 아버지 하나님께 순종하심으로써 이 지구라는 거대한 물 속으로 던져지셨고 마침내 땅의 심장인 지옥까지 내려가셔서 모든 죄인들이 받을 고통과 사망과 지옥 형벌을 대신 받으시고 셋째 날에 요나처럼 부활하신 것이다. 요나는 고래 뱃속에서 죽었으며 그의 혼이 부르짖었던 것이다. 다윗왕은 성령 안에서 주님께서 땅의 심장에서 하실 기도를 그의 입을 통하여 했다: “이는 주께서 내 혼을 지옥에 버려두지 아니하시며 주의 거룩하신 분으로 썩어짐을 보지 않게 하실 것임이니이다.”(시 16:10)

         지금도 많은 사람들이 요나의 표적이신 예수 그리스도의 복음을 깨닫지 못하고 여전히 표적을 따라다니면서 그들의 우상숭배를 버리지 못하고 여전히 죄악과 음란함에 있는 것을 본다. 옛날 이스라엘 백성들이 그랬던 것처럼 교회에 다니는 사람들이 동일한 우상숭배와 음행을 하면서도 깨닫지 못하고 눈에 보이는 기사와 표적만을 따라다니면서 미혹당하고 있는 것을 보는 것이다. 마지막 때에 사는 사람들을 향하여 “아무도 너희를 미혹하지 못하도록 주의하라. 많은 사람이 내 이름으로 와서 ‘내가 그리스도라.’고 말하며 많은 사람을 미혹하리라.”(마 24:4, 5)고 경고하셨다. 사도 베드로도 마지막 때에 살고 있는 우리들에게 경고했다 “만물의 마지막이 가까웠으니 그러므로 너희는 정신을 차리고 깨어 기도하라. 무엇보다 서로 뜨겁게 사랑하라. 이는 사랑이 허다한 허물을 덮기 때문이니라.”(벧전 4:7, 8) 오늘 이 요나의 표적인 그리스도의 복음을 깨닫고 회개하여 구원받지 못하면 세상 끝에 가장 포악하였던 민족이었지만 요나의 전파로 회개했던 니느웨 사람들이 나타나서 그들을 정죄하고 심판하게 될 것이라고 주님께서 말씀하신다. 아멘! 할렐루야!

Meditation of the week: Jonah 2:1-10

Main scripture: Matthew 12:38-42

Subject: The sign that is sought by the evil and adulterous generation; and Jonas’ sign

       Jewish people have been seeking visible signs such as miracles. Seeing many signs from the LORD God, they used to forget the signs, and followed idols. They had seen ten different wrath poured unto Egyptian by Moses and Aaron, when they cried out unto the LORD God in the midst of miserable slavery in Egypt. God divided the Red Sea for the people of Israel to pass through on foot on the dry land; and restored the Sea for Egyptian armies to overthrow all the Egyptians in the sea. They also saw waters like river flowing out of the rock in the desert, when Moses stokes the rock once. God also sent manna as well as quails for their food. For forty years in the wilderness, their clothes were not waxen old upon them, and their shoes were not waxen old upon their feet at all (Deut. 29:5). Isn’t it enough for them? Americans used to say in such case, “Enough is enough!”

       Since they entered into the land of Canaan, they forgot all the signs given unto them, they turn their eyes to the idols, and committed idolatry with fornication unto God, and they submitted their sons and daughters as sacrificing offerings unto the idols whether they are people or their kings. The LORD God sent his prophets to give the word of judgment; but they not hearkened unto them. Finally they were destroyed by the nation of Gentiles such as Babylon sent by God. Their idolatry always was followed by fornication.

         In the main passage, Pharisees and the Scribes, the leaders of the Jew came to Jesus to ask for signs again, when they were under ruling of Roman Empire. Jesus rebuked them saying, “An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign.” Jesus gave them the sign of Jonas that is the only sign for them. In other word, unless they understand the sign of Jonas, they shall be the evil and adulterous generation forever so that they shall be destroyed in the hell. Then, what is the sign of Jonas?  ^“For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”(v40)

Jesus was talking about the gospel of Christ that could deliver them from all their sins and fornication. Apostle Paul named the sign of Jonas as the gospel of Christ; and he testified, the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes whether they are Jews or Gentiles (Rom. 1:16) Apostle Paul testified, the sign of Jonas is the good news for the world, and testified of the gospel of Christ saying, “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”(1Cor. 15:3, 4)

       Apostle Paul understood the sign of Jonas, and testified of the gospel as Jonah did saying, ^“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”(1Cor. 1:18-21)

       Apostle Paul testified unto them that seek the signs in vain: ^“For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”(1Cor. 1:22-25)

       Thousands years ago, Jonah was cast into the sea for them on the boat by the lot, and spent three days and nights in the belly of the whale; and he cried unto the LORD God saying, “I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice……   ⁶I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.”(Jon. 2:2, 6)

Jesus Christ was cast into the great sea called as the earth for the sins of them that are evil and adulterous obeying the Father God. He went down to the hell that is the heart of the earth to receive the judgment of sin and death and the hell; and rose again the third day as Jonah did. Johan actually died in the belly of the whale; and his soul cried out. King David made the prayer of the Lord Jesus in the heart of the earth in the Spirit,   ^“For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.”(Ps. 16:10)

       Even nowadays, many people don’t understand the gospel of Jesus Christ that is the sign of Jonas and they are still looking for signs and wonders not repenting their idolatry. Jesus Christ warned unto us living in the last days saying, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. “(Matt. 24:4, 5) Apostle Peter also warned to the generation in the last days saying, “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”(1Pet. 4:7, 8) It is the right time for all men to understand the sign of Jonas that is the gospel of Christ to be saved. If not, the men of Nineveh shall rise to judge them, because they repented at the preaching of Jonas. Jesus said, behold, a great that Jonas is here. Amen! Hallelujah!
