제목: 요단강을 건넜는가?

     여호수아는 주 예수 그리스도의 그림자같은 사람으로서 백성들이 그를 따라 요단강을 건너 여리고를 거쳐 가나안 땅을 차지하는 여정은 오늘날 그리스도인들이 예수 그리스도를 따라 천국까지 가는 여정을 모형적으로 말씀하고 있는 것이다.

     모세를 따라 이집트를 떠난 백성들이 홍해 속을 통과한 것은 오늘날 죄인들이 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로써 그의 피를 통하여 구속 곧 죄사함을 받고 침례를 받는 것의 그림자였다. 그러나 이제 그들은 40년 간의 광야 생활을 마치고 요단강을 건너야만 하였다. 사도 바울은 자신을 돌로 쳤던 곳으로 다시 들어가서 제자들의 혼을 강건케 해 주고 그들이 믿음 안에 거하도록 권고하며, “또 우리가 많은 환난을 거쳐서 하나님의 나라에 들어가야 한다.”고 말했다 (행 14:22).

     그렇다! 이스라엘 백성들은 광야 생활 사십 년 동안 많은 연단과 환난을 당하면서 그것을 통과한 남은 자들은 이제 요단강을 건너 여리고 성을 정복하고 가나안 땅에 들어가 가나안 일곱 족속을 멸하고 그 땅을 차지하라는 주님의 명령에 순종해야  했다. 여호수아가 백성들에게 “너희는 스스로를 성결케 하라.(5절)고 명령한 것처럼 주님께서도 마지막으로 하나님의 자녀들을 위하여 기도하실 때, “아버지의 진리로 그들을 거룩하게 하여 주옵소서. 아버지의 말씀은 진리니이다.”(요 17:17)라고 말씀하셨다.

     이제 요단강만 건너면 그들은 이집트 생활이나 광야 생활로부터 완전히 벗어날 뿐만 아니라 돌아갈 수도 없게 될 것이다. 요단강은 마치 성도들이 마지막으로 통과하여야 할 죽음의 골짜기 같은 곳이다. 예수님께서 바로 이곳에서 침례를 받으심으로써 하나님의 뜻을 이루어야 한다고 말씀하셨다. 침례는 그리스도인들이 그리스도와 함께 죽었다는 사실을 믿음으로 고백하는 행위이기 때문이다. 사도 바울은 이에 관하여 “내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못박혀 있으니 그럼에도 나는 살아있노라…그리스도에게 속한 사람들은 그 육신을 욕정과 정욕과 함께 십자가에 처형하였느니라.”(갈 2:20, 5:24)고 증거했다.

      요단강은 구원받은 사람들이 천국문에 들어가기 위한 결단의 장소와 같은 곳이다. 죽기까지 신실하기로 주님 앞에 작정하는 곳이기도 한 것이다. 왜냐하면, 요단 강을 건넌 후에는 이제는 세상으로 돌아갈 수도 없고 천국으로 가는 행로도 포기할 수 없는 외길 인생이 되기 때문이다. 이제부터 본격적으로 주님과 동행하면서 영적 전쟁을 치르지 않으면 하나님의 나라를 차지할 수 없는 그런 자리에 놓인 것이다.

     본문에서 백성들이 요단강을 건너야하는 때는 헤르몬 산으로부터 녹은 눈이 흘러내려와 항상 둑이 넘치는 추수하는 계절이었다. 이때에 하나님께서는 제사장들로 하여금 언약궤를 메고 강물로 들어가 있으라고 명령하셨다. 언약궤는 성막 안에서 하나님의 영광이 임하였던 곳이었다. 다시 말해서 하나님께서 임재하시는 곳이었다. 언약궤 안에는 모세가 받은 십계명 돌판(신 10:4)과 만나가 담긴 금 항아리(출 16:33,34)와 아론의 싹난 지팡이(민 17:10)가 들어 있었다. 예수께서 자신을 살아있는 만나(빵)(요 6:47-51)라 말씀하셨고, 십계명을 범한 우리의 죄들로 인해 죽으셨다가 아론의 지팡이에서 싹이 난 것처럼 부활하셨다(고전 15:1-4). 다시 말해서 언약궤는 오늘날 주 예수 그리스도 자신을 상징하는 것이며 그 당시 하나님의 임재가 물리적으로 나타난 곳이었다. 그들은 하나님의 임재를 따라 요단강 속으로 믿음으로 뛰어들어야 했던 것이다. 그때에 하나님의 기적이 나타났던 것이다. 홍해를 건널 때처럼 그들은 언약궤를 멘 제사장들을 따라 요단강을 마른 땅으로 건널 수 있었다.

     하나님께서는 요단강의 물이 가장 많이 넘쳐서 도저히 사람의 생각으로는 강을 건널 수 없는 상황 속에서 언약궤를 따라 강을 건널 것을 명령하셨다. 궤를 멘 제사장들의 발이 물가에 잠기자 위로부터 내려온 물이 서서 사레탄 옆에 있는 아담 성읍으로부터 아주 멀리 물 무더기를 일으키고 평원의 바다 쪽, 즉 염해로 흘러가는 물은 그쳐서 끊어지니 백성이 여리고 앞으로 바로 거널 수 있었다(15절).

     오늘날에도 하나님께서는 하나님의 교회 성도들에게 세우신 종들을 통하여 말씀을 선포하심으로써 그분의 뜻을 행하시기 원하신다. 사람의 생각으로나 능력으로 불가능한 일들을 선포하심으로써 준비된 믿음의 사람들이 모든 어려움을 하나님의 기적으로 극복하기를 원하시는 것이다. 지금도 주의 종들은 말씀을 선포하고 말씀을 묵상하면서 어려움 속에 발을 담그고 기다리는 것이다. 이때에 믿음의 자녀들이 모든 문제들을 극복하고 통과하게 되는 것이다. 이렇게 요단강 같은 어려움이 앞에 놓인 하나님의 자녀들은 백성들이 삼일 동안 쉬면서 자신들을 성결케 하였던 것처럼 기도하며 쉬면서 주님의 명령을 기다려야 하는 것이다. 이때에 여호수아가 “내일이면 주께서 너희 가운데 이적들을 행하시리라.”(5절)고 말씀하셨던 것처럼 우리에게도 주님께서 말씀을 통하여 말씀하실 것이다.

     그렇다! 요단강을 건너는, 다시 말해서 불가능한 가운데 역사하시는 하나님의 기적을 체험한 사람들 만이 가나안 땅 같은 천국의 기업을 믿음의 선한 싸움을 싸움으로써 차지할 수 있는 것이다. 하나님의 기적은 최상의 어려움이 앞에 있을 때 일어나는 것이다. 하나님의 말씀을 따라 어려움 가운데 발을 담그고 서 있으면 되는 것이다. 어려움들이 마치 요단물이 벽을 이룬 것처럼 정지될 때까지 말이다. 말씀을 믿음으로 기다려야 하나님의 영광을 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 오늘날 그리스도인들은 누구나 왕같은 제사장들이라고 사도 베드로가 증거했다 (벧전 2:9). 오늘날 구원받은 우리들은 누구나 법궤를 메고 요단강 속으로 들어갈 수 있는 것이다. 우리 안에 언약궤보다 더 확실한 주님께서 함께 계시기 때문이다. 사도 바울은 질그릇 속에 보배를 가졌다고 증거하지 않았는가?(고후 4:7)

      하나님께서 우리에게 주신 말씀을 믿음으로 죽음의 골짜기 속으로 발을 내 딛자! 죽음의 그림자들이 갈라지는 기적을 보게 될 것이다. 어려움 가운데 주의 말씀의 능력으로 하나님의 영광을 보게 될 때에 하나님의 전신갑주를 입고 우리 안에서 역사하는 가나안 일곱 족속을 몰아내고 영적 전쟁에서 승리하여 영원한 가나안 땅인 하나님의 왕국을 차지하게 될 것이다. 할렐루야!

Subject: Did you pass over Jordan?
Joshua is the shadow of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the journey following him to pass over into Jordan, and pass through Jericho to occupy Canaan is same as the journey to the kingdom of God following Jesus Christ.

     People of Israel out of Egypt  passed through Red Sea following Moses was to show the baptism of Christian after sinners receive the remission of sin through the blood of Jesus Christ. Now they had finished the journey in the wilderness, and were going to pass over Jordan. Apostle Paul confirmed the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and encouraged them saying, “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”(Acts 14:22)

     Yea!  The remnant of Israel passing through trials and tribulations in the wilderness for 40 years had to obey the word of the LORD to pass over Jordan, and conquer Jericho , and destroy the seven tribes to take over the land. As Joshua commanded to sanctify themselves, Jesus also prayed for disciples to sanctify them saying, “17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”(John 17:17)

     When they pass over Jordan, they shall be totally out of wilderness, and not be able to return into the wilderness again. Jordan is a kind of the valley of death where the believers have to pass through to the end. Jesus was baptized in Jordan to do the will of God. Baptism is the action of faith of Christians to confess themselves died with Christ. Apostle Paul testified regarding this:
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live….And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”(Gal 2:20, 5:24)

     Jordan is a kind of place for Christian to be ready to enter into the kingdom of God; also the place of decision to be faithful unto God unto death, for they cannot go back to the world, nor can give up the journey to heaven. They have to be ready to do spiritual warfare to occupy the kingdom of God walking with the Lord.

     When they were commanded to pass over Jordan, Jordan overflowed all his banks all the time of harvest, for snows were melting, and flowing down from Mount Hermon. LORD commanded the priests that bore the ark to pass over into Jordan. The ark was the place where the glory of God was present in the tabernacle of God. There were the table of stone that were written the ten commandments therein (Deut 10:4), and the golden pot that had manna (Ex 16:33,34), and Aaron’s rod that budded (Num. 17:10) in the ark. Jesus said himself the living manna (bread) (John 6:47-51), and died for our sins against   Ten Commandments, and rose again as the Aaron’s rod was budded (1Cor. 15:1-4).  In other word, the ark is the symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ. At that time, the presence of God was on the ark physically. They had to pass over into Jordan following the presence of God by faith.  Then the miracle of God was followed. They could pass over Jordan on dry ground following the priests bearing the ark as they had already passed over Red Sea.

     God commanded them to pass over Jordan following the priests bearing the ark when it was overflowed at the most beyond understanding of men. When the feet of the priest that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho (v15).

     Nowadays, God wants to do his will through his servants proclaiming the words of God in the church. Proclaiming the words beyond human understanding, he wants the men of faith to overcome the troubles through the miracle of God. Even nowadays, the servants of God are dipping their feet in the waters proclaiming and meditating his words waiting upon the Lord. Then the children of faith  are to overcome all the troubles to pass over them. As they rested for three days and sanctified themselves, the children of God also are to pray, and rest, and wait upon the Lord. As Joshua said to the people, “For tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”(v5), our Lord Jesus shall speak to us through his word.

     Yea! Only they that pass over Jordan, in other word, experience the miracle of God shall occupy the inheritance in the kingdom of God as Canaan through the good fight of faith. The miracle of God is to happen in the midst of extreme situation. We only have to dip our feet in the trouble according to the word of God, until the trouble stands and rise up upon the heap as the waters of Jordan.  We shall see the glory of God when we wait upon the Lord by faith. Apostle Peter testified that all the Christians are the royal priests (1Pet 2:9).  All the believers can jump into Jordan bearing the ark, our Lord Jesus is within us much more real one than the ark. Apostle Paul testified that we have this treasure in earthen vessels (2Cor. 4:7).
Let us step into the valley of death by faith in the words given to us! We shall see the miracle of dividing the shadows of death. When we see the glory of God in the midst of tribulation, we wear the whole armor of God to cast out the seven tribes in us, and shall occupy the kingdom of God which is the eternal Canaan.
