본문: 여호수아 11:1-23

제목: 카나안 정복을 통하여 우리에게 주시는 교훈

     마침내 하솔이 이끄는 연합군들이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 나왔다. 유대의 역사가 요세푸스에 의하면 가나안 군대는 보병이 30만, 말이 1만, 병거가 2만 승으로 구성되었을 것이라고 한다. 이때에도 하나님께서는 말씀을 주셨다: “그들로 인하여 무서워 말라. 이는 내일 이맘때에 내가 그들을 이스라엘 앞에 넘겨 몰살시키리니 너희는 그들의 말 뒷다리의 힘줄을 끊고 불로 병거들을 태우라.”(6절)

주께서 말씀하신대로 그들을 이스라엘에게 넘겨주셨고 이스라엘이 그들을 치고 추격하여 큰 시돈과 미스레봇마임과 동쪽으로는 미스페 골짜기까지 이르렀고 이스라엘이 그들을 쳐서 한 사람도 남기지 아니하셨더라. 또한 여호수아는 주께서 그에게 명하신 대로 그들의 말 뒷 다리의 힘줄을 끊고 병거들을 불태었다. 하나님께서 말씀하신 것을 믿고 순종하며 싸웠을 때 결국은 말의 뒷 다리의 힘줄을 끊고 병거들을 태울 수 있었던 것이다.

하나님께서 그들의 마음을 완악하게 하신 것은, 그들이 악함을 아시고 그 악함이 드러나게 하신 것이다. 파라오 왕의 경우에도 마찬가지였다.

     하나님께서는 이미 이스라엘의 조상 아브라함에게 하신 약속의 말씀을 이루시기 위하여 말씀을 주셨고 여호수아는 그 말씀을 믿고 순종함으로써 주의 말씀을 이루시게 한 것이다. 하나님께서는 오래 전에  아브라함에게 가나안 땅을 그의 씨에게 주시겠다고 약속하셨으며 구체적인 위치와 멸망시킬 민족들의 이름들까지 친히 그분의 이름으로 맹세하셨던 것이다:

“내가 이땅을 이집트 강에서부터 큰 강 유프라테스까지 네 씨에게 주었으니, 켄인들과 크닉스인들과 캇몬인들과 힛인들과 프리스인들과 르파인들과 아모리인들과 카나안인들과 기르가스인들과 여부스인들의 땅이니라.”(창 15:18-21)

     하나님 아버지께서는 그분의 독생자를 성령으로 나게 하시고 그분에게 온 땅을 유업으로 주셨다고 말씀하셨다:

“’내가 나의 거룩한 시온 위에 내 왕을 세웠도다.’ 하시리라. 내가 칙령을 선포하리라. 주께서 내게 말씀하시기를 ‘너는 내 아들이라. 오늘 내가 너를 낳았노라. 내게 구하라. 그러면 내가 너에게 이방을 네 유업으로, 땅의 맨끝을 네 소유로 주리라. 네가 그들을 철장으로 깨뜨릴 것이며, 토기장이의 질그릇같이 산산이 부수리로다.’ 하셨도다. 그러므로, 오 너희 왕들아, 이제 현명해지라. 너희 땅의 재판관들아, 교훈을 받을지어다. 두려움으로 주를 섬기고 떨림으로 즐거워하라. 그 아들에게 입맞추라. 그렇지 않으면 그가 노하실 것이요, 그가 조금만 격분하셔도 너희가 그 길에서 망하리라. 그들 신뢰하는 모든 사람은 복이 있도다.”(시 2:6-12)

    여호수아를 통하여 가나안 땅을 주시고 그 땅을 정복하게 하신 하나님께서는 그 아들이신 주 예수 그리스도에게는 온 지구 땅끝까지 소유로 주신 것이다. 아담의 죄로 인해 죄와 사망의 권세 잡은 마귀에게 통째로 빼앗긴 땅을 다시 찾으시기 위해 세상 죄를 제거하고 사망을 멸망시키기 위해 사람의 모습으로 나타나신 하나님의 아들 주 예수 그리스도께 모든 것을 주셨던 것이다. 아들이신 주님께서 죽기까지 복종하심으로써 그분을 지극히 높이시고 모든 이름 위에 있는 한 이름을 그에게 주사 하늘에 있는 것이나 땅 위에 있는 것이나 땅 아래 있는 것이나 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고 모든 혀가 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하신 것이다 (빌 2:6-11)

    뿐만 아니라, 누구든지 그분을 영접한 사람들에게는 하나님의 아들들이 되는 권세를 주셨는 바, 곧 그의 이름을 믿는 사람들에게 약속하셨다. 하나님의 자녀가 된 사람들은 더 이상 혈로나 육신의 뜻으로나 사람의 뜻으로 난 사람들이 아니고 하나님께서 난 사람들이 된 것이다. 다시 말해서 주 에수 그리스도를 태어나게 하신 동일한 성령을 통하여 하나님의 양자들이 되게 하신 것이다.

    여호수아가 이스라엘 백성들의 총사령관이 된 것처럼 죄와 사망을 이기시고 부활하신 주 예수 그리스도께서 하나님의 자녀들의 총 사령관이 되셔서 열 한 제자에게 명령하셨다:

“하늘과 땅에 있는 모든 권세를 나에게 주셨도다. 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족들을 가르치고, 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 침례를 주며 내가 너희에게 명령한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라. 보라, 내가 세상 끝까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라.”(마 28:18-20)

     부활하신 후 승천하시기 위하여 제자들과 함께 모이셨을 때에 그들이 여러 날이 지나지 않아 성령으로 침례를 받을 것을 말씀하셨다. 이때 제자들이 “주여, 이 때에 이스라엘에 그 왕국을 다시 회복하시겠나이까?”물었을 때, 주님께서는 그 때나 시기는 아버지의 권한에 두셨으며 성령께서 임하시면 그들이 능력을 받을 것이며 그 능력을 힘입어 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 그분의 증인이 될 것이라 말씀하셨다. 이 마지막 말씀을 마치시고 곧장 승천하셨다.

     그렇다! 하나님의 약속의 말씀을 받은 여호수아가 명령하였을 때 순종하여 모든 민족들과 싸워 이김으로써 그분의 말씀의 증인들이 된 것처럼 지금도 여호수아보다 더 크신 하나님이신 주 예수 그리스도의 명령에 순종하여 땅끝까지 그분의 증인이 되어 그리스도의 복음을 전파하는 자들에게 상을 주실 것이다. 여호수아가 주께서 모세에게 말씀하신 모든 것대로 온 땅을 취하였으며 모든 지파의 구분을 따라 그 땅을 이스라엘에게 유업으로 주셨을 때 그 땅에 전쟁이 그치게 되었다. 그렇다! 주님께서 오셔야만 이 땅에 전쟁이 그치게 될 것이다.

     우리의 사령관이신 주 예수 그리스도께서 다시 오실 때에 열 므나 남긴 사람에게는 “잘하였다. 착한 종아, 네가 아주 작은 일에 신실하였으니 열 고을을 다스리는 권세를 가지라.”(눅 19:17) 다섯 므나를 남긴 사람에게도, “너도 다섯 고을을 다스리는 자가 되라.”(눅 19:19) 주신 한 므나를 손수건에 싸서 간직한 사람에게는 “악한 종아, 네 입에서 나오는 말로 내가 너를 심판하리라. 너는 내가 두지 않았던 것에서 취하고, 심지도 않았던 것에서 거두는 사람인 줄 알았도다.” 말씀하시면서 그 옆에 있는 사람들에게 말씀하시기를 “그에게서 그 한 므나를 빼앗아 열 므나를 가진 사람에게 주라.”말씀하셨다 (눅 19:22-24).

     누구든지 회개하고 주 예수 그리스도를 믿어 영접하는 사람들은 멸망하지 않고 영원한 생명을 얻는다. 그러나 하나님 왕국에 있는 상속은 별개의 문제인 것이다. 성령님께서 사도 바울을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하신다:

“’잠자는 자여 깨어라. 그리고 죽은 자들로부터 일어나라. 그러면 그리스도께서 네게 빛을 주시리라.’고 하셨느니라. 그러므로 너희가 얼마나 정확히 행하고 있는지 주의하라. 미련한 사람같이 행하지 말고 현명한 사람같이 행하여 시간을 사서 얻으라. 이는 그의 날들이 악하기 때문이니라. 이로 인하여 너희는 어리석게 되지 말고 주의 뜻이 무엇인지 이해하라. 술취하지 말라. 그것은 방탕한 것이니 오직 성령으로 충만하라.”(엡 5:14-17)

     그렇다! 우리의 짧은 삶은 세상 술에 취하든지 성령에 취하든지 둘 중에 하나가 될 것이다. 세상에 취하게 되면 온갖 육신의 일들을 행하게 되며, 성령에 충만하게 되면 그리스도를 증거하게 될 것이다. 그러므로 육신의 일들을 행하는 자들은 하나님의 나라(왕국)를 상속받지 못하는 것이다 (갈 5:19-21)

    하나님의 지혜를 가지고 우리에게 주신 손 너비만한 삶을 주님을 위하여 헌신하자! 사도 바울처럼 그리스도의 날에 기뻐하는 자들이 되자! 할렐루야!

Meditation: Psalms 9:1-20

Subject: The message through the final conquest of Canaan

     Finally the united armies led by the king of Hazor went out to fight with Israel. According to Jewish historian, Josephus, the hosts of Canaan might have three hundred thousand of infantries, ten thousands of horses, and twenty thousand of chariots. Again the LORD gave the word unto Israel:   ^“And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”(v6)

As the LORD spoke to them, he delivered them into the hand of Israel; and Israel smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmain, and unto the valley of Mizpeh; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining. As the Lord commanded, Joshua hocked their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire. When they believed on the word of the LORD, and fought, they could hock their horses and burn their chariots. The LORD hardened their heart, for they were wicked, so that their wickedness was revealed to be judged by the LORD. In the case of Pharaoh, it was the same situation.

     God gave the word unto Joshua to achieve the word of promise given unto Abraham, their forefather; and Joshua had faith in his word; and obeyed the word to make it done as the promise of God. Long time ago, the LORD God promised to Abraham to give the land of Canaan to his seed; the Lord made vow mentioning exact territory and the names of the nations to be destroyed:

“¹⁸In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:   ¹⁹The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,    ²⁰And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,    ²¹And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”(Gen. 15:18-21)

     The Father God gave birth to his only begotten Son in the Holy Ghost, and promised him to give the inheritance of the uttermost part of the earth:  “ ⁶Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.  ⁷I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.    ⁸Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.   ⁹Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.  ¹⁰Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. ¹¹Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.  ¹²Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”(Ps 2:6-12)

     The LORD God gave Joshua the land of Canaan, and let him conquer it; he also gave the uttermost part of the whole earth to the Lord Jesus Christ, his Son. Jesus appeared as a man to take away the sin of the world, and to destroy death to restore the earth taken by the Devil that has the power of sin and death because of sin of Adam. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God became obedient unto death. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to glorify of God the Father (Phil. 2:6-11)

     And as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. The children of God were born anymore, not of blood, nor of the will of the death, nor of the will of man, but of God. In other word, God adopted us to be his sons through the same Spirit that gave birth to the Lord Jesus Christ.

    As Joshua became the chief commander, the Lord Jesus, our chief commander who overcame the sin and death, and resurrected commanded to his disciples: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. ¹⁹Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:   ²⁰Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”(Matt. 28:18-21)

     After Jesus rose again, and assembled with his disciples to be lifted to heaven, he said, they shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Then they asked Jesus, “Lord wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus answer them, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”(Acts 1:6-8) And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up into heaven.

     Yes! As Joshua who received the word of the LORD commanded them, they obeyed and fought to victory, and they became the witnesses of the word of God, Lord Jesus shall give reward unto them that obey his word, and preach the gospel to the uttermost of the earth. Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to the divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war. Yes! The earth shall rest from war when Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

     When our chief commander, the Lord Jesus Christ come again to the earth, he shall reward the man that gained then pounds from one pound saying,

   “Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.”(Luke 19:17) And he shall also say to the man that gained five pounds, “Be thou also over five cities.”(Luke 19:19) And he shall rebuke the man have kept the pound in a napkin saying, “Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: ²³Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?   ²⁴And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. “(Luke 19:22-24)

     Whosoever repent and receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith shall receive the life eternal not to perish. But the inheritance is a different one. The Holy Spirit spoke unto us through Apostle Paul:

“Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.  ¹⁵See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,   ¹⁶Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. ¹⁷Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. “(Eph. 5:14-17)

     Yes! We are either to be drunken by the wine of the world, or filled by the Holy Spirit, the new wine in this short period of life. Drunken by the world, we are to do the works of the flesh; being filled with the Holy Spirit, we are to be witnesses unto Christ. Therefore they which do the things of the flesh shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal. 5:19-21)

    Let us dedicate our life that is as much as the size of hand unto the Lord using the wisdom of God! Let us be the men that rejoice in the day of Christ as Apostle Paul! Hallelujah!
