제목: 칼렙의 믿음

     이스라엘 자손들이 제사장 엘리아살과 눈의 아들 여호수아와 이스라엘의 지파의 족장들의 주관 하에 지파별로 유업을 분배하였다. 그들은 하나님의 종 모세사 명한대로 제비를 뽑아 결정하였다. 제비뽑기를 통하여 하나님의 뜻을 찾고 그 뜻에 순종하기 위함이었다. 마가의 다락방에서도 예수님을 팔아넘긴 유다를 이어 열두 사도에 속할 사람을 정할 때에도 그들은 제비를 뽑았다. 유스도라 하는 요셉과 맛디아를 세우고 기도한 후에 제비를 뽑으니 맛디아에게 떨어졌고 그가 열한 사도와 함께 계수되었다 (행 1:23-26)

     여호수아와 함께 가나안 땅을 탐지하였던 칼렙이 본문에 나타난다. 그는 유다 지파의 족장이었다. 옛날 동료였던 여호수아에게 그는 부하로서 청하였다:

“당신은 주께서 하나님의 사람 모세에게 카데스바네아에서 나와 당신에 관하여 말씀하신 것을 아시나이다. 내가 마흔 살이었는데 주의 종 모세가 카데스바네아로부터 그 땅을 탐지하라고 나를 보냈을 때 나는 내 마음 속에 있는 대로 그에게 보고하였나이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 나와 함께 갔던 내 형제들은 백성의 마음을 녹였으나 나는 온전히 주 나의 하나님을 따랐나이다. 모세가 그 날 맹세하여 말하기를 ‘네 발로 밟고 있는 그 땅은 너와 네 자손의 영원한 유업이 되리니 이는 네가 온전히 주 나의 하나님을 따랐음이라.’ 하였나이다. 이제 보소서, 주께서 이 말씀을 모세에게 말씀하신 이래로 이스라엘 자손이 광야에서 방황하던 동안 주께서 말씀하신 대로 사십오 년 간을 나로 살게 하셨나이다. 이제 보소서, 오늘에 내가 팔십오 세니이다. 나는 모세가 그 날 나를 보내었을 때처럼 오늘에도 여전히 강건하여 나의 힘이 그때처럼 지금도 강건하여 전쟁을 위하여 나가고 들어올 수 있나이다. 그러므로 이제 그 날에 주께서 말씀하신 이 산을 나에게 주소서. 거기에는 아낙인이 있고 그 성읍들은 크고 견고하다는 것을 당신도 그 날 들었거니와 만일 주께서 나와 함께 하신다면 주께서 내게 말씀하신 대로 내가 그들을 쫓아내리이다.”

     이때에 여호수아가 칼렙을 축복하고 그에게 헤브론을 유업으로 주었다. 칼렙은 그에게 주신 약속의 말씀을 잊지 않고 사십오 년을 기다렸던 것이다. 그리고 그 말씀 대로 아낙인이 있는 카나안 산지룰 달라고 요청했던 것이다. 그가 약속받았던 땅에 아직도 거인들인 아낙 자손들이 남아있고 성읍도 견고한 것을 알았지만 하나님께서 함께 하신다면 그가 싸워서 그것을 취할 수 있다고 믿음의 고백을 하였던 것이다.

     그는 그가 카나안 땅을 탐지하고 돌아왔을 때 그의 마음 속에 있는 대로 보고했다고 고백하였다. 다시 말해서 그의 양심 속에 있는 믿음 대로 사람을 의식하지 않고 모세에게 보고드렸음을 상기 시켰으며 여호수아가 그의 말에 증인이었다.

그가 드린 보고로 인하여 그는 돌에 맞아 죽을 뻔 하였었다. 여호수아와 칼렙 외에 열 명의 정탐꾼들은 “그 땅은 거민들을 삼키는 땅이요, 거기에는 우리가 보았던 대로 백성은 키가 큰 사람들이었으며 또 우리가 거기서 거인들을 보았는데, 거인들에게서 태어난 아낙 자손들이라. 우리들의 눈에도 우리가 메뚜기 같았을 것이라.”(민 13:32-33)고 흉보를 전했다. 그때에 모든 회중들은 소리높여 부르짖으며 울었다. 또한 그들은 다시 이집트로 돌아가자고 불평하며 외쳤다.

     한편 여호수아와 칼렙은 그들의 옷을 찢으며 정 반대의 보고를 드렸다:“우리가 탐지하러 다녀 본 땅은 아주 좋은 땅이라. 만일 주께서 우리를 기뻐하시면, 그가 우리를 이 땅으로 데려다가 그것을 우리에게 주시리니, 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이라. 오직 너희는 주를 거역하지 말며 또한 너희는  그 땅의 백성을 두려워하지 말라. 그들은 우리의 밥이요, 그들의 보호자는  그들에게서 떠났으나, 주께서는 우리와 함께 계시니, 그들을 두려워 말라.”(민 14:7-9) 불신과 믿음의 고백은 정반대로 나타났던 것이다.

   그때 즉시 모든 회중들이 그들을 돌로 치라고 말했다. 그들은 돌 무더기 속에서 처참하게 죽어야만 했던 순간이었다. 그러나 바로 그때 주의 영광이 성막에서 이스라엘 모든 자손에게 나타났다. 하나님께서 말씀하셨다. “이 백성이 언제까지 나를 진노케 하겠느냐? 내가 그들 가운데서 보여준 모든 표적들에에도 불구하고 언제까지 그들이 나를 믿지 않겠느냐? 내가 전염병으로 그들을 쳐서 상속받지 못하게 하고 너로 그들 보다 더 크고 막강한 민족이 되게 하리라.”(민 14:11-12)고 진노하셨다. 다시 말해서 모든 백성들을 죽이고 모세를 통하여 다시 백성을 만드시겠다는 엄청난 말씀이었다. 하나님께서는 하나님을 신뢰하면서 사람을 두려워하지 않고 선포하면서 죽음을 두려워하지 않는 사람에게 살리시는 역사를 나타내시는 것이다. 예수께서도 “자기 생명을 찾는 자는 잃을 것이요, 나로 인하여 자기 생명을 잃는 사람은 찾을 것이라.”(마 10:39)고 말씀하셨다.

     생명을 내어놓았던 그 두 사람은 생명을 찾았으나, 하나님께서 그 모든 회중을  죽이시겠다고 모세에게 말씀하셨다. 그때 모세가 자비의 하나님께 중보함으로 간청하였을 때 “내가 네 말대로 용서하였노라.”(민 14:13-20)고 말씀하셨다. 그 대신 그들에게는 그들의 조상들에게 맹세하신 그 땅을 결단코 보지 못할 것이며 또 그분을 진노케 했던 그들 중 누구도 그 땅을 보지 못하리라고 말씀하셨다. 또 말씀하시기를 “나의 종 칼렙은 그에게 다른 영이 있어 나를 온전히 따랐으니, 그가 갔던 그 땅으로 내가 그를 데려가서 그의 씨가 그 땅을 소유하게 하리라.”(민 14:24)고 말씀하셨다. 이스라엘 회중에 대하여는, 그들의 시체가 광야에 쓰러질 것이며 이십 세 이상, 즉 그분을 거역하여 불평했던 자들은 여푼네의 아들 칼렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아를 제외하고는 약속의 땅에 절대로 들어가지 못한다고 선포하셨다 (민 14:29-30)

     그 당시 모세 외에 하나님의 약속의 말씀을 믿은 사람은 여호수아와 칼렙 단 두 사람 뿐이었다. 하나님께서는 그들에게 믿음을 주시기 위하여 홍해를 가르시고 반석에서 물이 나게 하시는 등 많은 표적들을 통해서 전능하신 주 하나님을 미리 보여주셨기 때문에 믿지 않는 사람에게 주어지는 것은 죽음 그 자체였던 것이다. 오늘날은 어떠한가? 주님께서도 분명하게 말씀하시며 경고하셨다.   “하나님께서는 자신에게 밤낮 부르짖는 자신이 선택한 사람들의 원한을 갚아주시지 않고, 그들에게 오래 참고만 계시겠느냐? 내가 너희에게 말하노니 하나님께서는 그들의 원한을 속히 갚아주시리라. 그러나 인자가 올 때 그가 세상에서 믿음을 찾아볼 수 있겠느냐?”(눅 18:7-8)

     우리가 하나님께 드릴 것은 단 한 가지뿐이다. 그분께서 약속하신 모든 말씀들을 무조건 믿는 것이다. 모든 사람은 거짓말쟁이지만 하나님은 참되시기 때문이다(롬 3:4). 우리가 필요한 것들을 하나님께서 더 잘 아신다. 하나님을 신뢰하며 그분의 뜻에 순종하며 그분께서 명령하신 것들을 순종하는 자에게 축복이 임하는 것이다. 그러나 순종의 삶에는 반드시 고난이 먼저 찾아오지만 그 끝은 화평인 것이다. 믿음이 없는 사람이 되지 말고 믿음이 있는 사람들이 되어 하나님을 기쁘시게 하자! 그분을 믿는 자는 그가 계신 것과 그분을 열심히 찾는 자들에게 보상하시는 분이심을 믿는 것이다 (히 11:6). 사도 요한은 “사랑하는 자들아, 만일 우리 마음이 우리를 정죄하지 아니하면 우리가 하나님 앞에서 담대함을 얻고 무엇이든지 구하는 것을 그에게서 받나니, 이는 우리가 그의 계명들을 지키고 그의 목전에 기쁨이 되는 일들을 행함이라.”(요일 3:21-22)고 증거했다. 그분의 말씀을 믿는 것이 그분을 사랑하는 것이다. 할렐루야!

Meditation: Psalms 42:1-11

Subject: Faith of Caleb

     Eliazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for the inheritance to the people of Israel. By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses. Through the lot, they wanted to obey the will of God. In the upper room of Mark, they gave forth their lots after prayer; and the lot fell upon Matthias instead of Joseph called Barsabas; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles (Acts 1:23-26)

     Caleb appears who espied out the land of Canaan with Joshua. He was the chief of the tribe of Judah. He made petition to Joshua who was his colleague in the past, but now is his commander:

“⁶Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea. ⁷Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. ⁸Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.  ⁹And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.  ¹⁰And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.  ¹¹As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. ¹²Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.”(vss 6-12)

     Joshua blessed Caleb, and gave unto him Hebron for an inheritance. Caleb had waited for 45 years not forgetting the word of promise given unto him by Moses. And as the word, he asked Joshua to give the mountain of Canaan, where were the Anakims. Even though he knew the Anakims were still there, and the cities were great and fenced, but he made the confession of faith saying, “If so be the LORD would be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.”

     He reminded Joshua that he made report to Moses as it was in his heart after he espied out the land. In other word, he reported to Moses as the faith in his conscience not caring other people, and Joshua was his witness. Because of his good report, he was almost stoned to death, for other ten spies made bad reports to the people saying, “32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. ³³And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”(Num. 13:32-33) And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and they wept that night.

    In other hand, Joshua and Caleb made the totally opposite report tearing their clothes saying, “ ⁷The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. ⁸If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. ⁹Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. “(Num. 14:7-9)

     But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. They were almost going to be stoned and buried in the pile of stones. At the time, the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel. And the LORD spoke unto them with fury:  “ ¹¹And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? ¹²I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they. “(Num. 14:11-12)

     What a shocking word it was? The LORD wanted to kill all of them except Moses, and reproduce the people of Israel through Moses again. God want to give life to them that trust in him, and proclaim the truth according to the word of God not fearing death. Jesus also said ³⁹He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”(Matt. 10:39)

     Two men, Joshua and Caleb found their life, the LORD said to Moses to kill all the congregation. When Moses interceded to the LORD of mercy, he forgave them saying, I have pardoned according to thy word.” He also said, “Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it.”    And he also said, ^“24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.”)Num. 14:24)  About the congregation of Israel, the LORD said, your caracases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of them, according to their whole number, from twenty years old and upwatd, which have murmured against him only except Caleb and Joshua. (Num. 14:29-30)

     At that time, only two men had faith in the LORD besides Moses. The LORD had divided the Red Sea and made the rock to bring forth the waters to show them signs. Therefore whosoever not believed on him was destined to die. What about these days? Lord Jesus said clearly about this:

 “ ⁷And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?   ⁸I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? “(Luke 18:7-8)

    Only one thing that we can give to the Lord is faith in his words of promise without any condition. Every man is a liar; only God is true (Rom. 3:4). Our Father God knows what we need better than what we know. The blessing of the Lord shall come upon them that trust in the Lord, and obey his will, and obey his commandments. The life of obedience bring forth suffering, but the end shall be peace. Let us please God with faith! Those that believe in him must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarded of them that diligently seek him (Heb. 11:6)

Apostle John testified:

   “²¹Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.  ²²And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. “(1John 3:21-22)

To believe on his words is to love him. Hallelujah!
