성시: 시편 136:1-26

본문: 요한복음 4:27-39

제목: 영원한 추수

     청교도들이 아메리카 대륙에 정착하여 처음으로 거둬들인 추수에 대하여 하나님께 감사한 이후 매년 11월 넷째 목요일을 추수감사절(Thanksgiving Day) 명절로 지켜왔다. 육신의 양식을 주신 하나님께 진정으로 감사 드릴 줄 아는 청교도들은 육신을 위한 양식을 먹음으로써 힘을 얻어 가장 귀한 영적인 씨를 온 세계에 심고 거두는 일을 시작하였다. 그들이 이 땅에 온 것은 로마 카톨릭의 박해를 피하여 신앙의 자유를 얻기 위한 것이었기에 그들은 모든 사람이 구원을 받고 진리의 지식에 이르기 원하시는 하나님의 뜻을 행하기 원했던 것이다(딤전 2:4).

     본문에서 주님께서 하신 말씀 가운데 우리가 깊이 묵상해야 할 말씀들이 있다: “나의 음식은 나를 보내신 분의 뜻을 행하고 그분의 일을 완성하는 것이라.”(요 4:34) “거두는 사람은 삯을 받고 영원한 생명에 이르는 열매를 모으느니라. 이는 뿌리는 사람과 거두는 사람이 다 함께 즐거워하게 함이라.”(요 4:36) 또한 “눈을 들어 밭을 보라.”(요 4:35)고 말씀하셨다. 주님께서는 음식을 드시는 것보다 우선 먼저 영생의 열매를 거두신 후에 음식을 드시며 기뻐하시기 원하셨다. 옛날 우리나라가 가난했던 시절에 허기진 배를 움켜잡고 가장 좋은 볍씨를 뿌려 추수할 것을 기대하면서 보리떡으로 허기를 채웠던 적이 있었다. 주님께서 유대 땅으로부터 사마리아까지 걸어가셨으니 얼마나 시장하셨겠는가? 제자들은 먹을 것부터 챙겨야 했는데 주님은 씨를 뿌리고 추수할 생각에 시장함도 잊으셨다. 추수할 소망이 허기진 배를 채웠을 것이다.

     추수란 것은 씨를 뿌린 후 몇 달이 지나서 익은 열매를 거두는 것이다. 삼십 배, 육십 배 또는 백 배를 거두는 것이다. 주님께서 말씀하시는 열매는 “영생의 열매”이다. 사마리아의 한 여인의 마음 속에 복음의 씨를 뿌려서 그 여인을 통하여 온 동네 사람들의 마음에 또 다시 뿌려 그 동네에 사는 모든 사람들에 영생을 주심으로써 하늘 곳간에 추수하려 하셨던 것이다. 오래 전에 시편 기자도 앞으로 있을 영생의 열매를 추수할 것을 미리 보고 “귀한 씨를 가지고 나가서 우는 자는 정녕 기쁨으로 그의 단들을 가지고 돌아오리로다.”(시 126:6)라고 예언했다.

    사도 바울은 영생에 이르는 열매를 추수하는 일에 대하여 “이는 나로 이방인들을 위한 예수 그리스도의 일꾼이 되게 하시어 하나님의 복음을 수행하게 하심으로써 이방인들을 제물로 드리는 일이 성령으로 거룩하게 되어 받으실 수 있도록 하심이라.”(롬 15:16) 증거했다. 복음으로 혼들을 구원하여 하나님께 영생의 열매를 드린다는 것이다. 한국에서는 매년 추석 때마다 구원받지 못한 사람들은 한 해 추수한 곡식을 조상을 위한 제물로 드린다. 이제는 죽은 조상들에게 제물을 드리는 것이 아니라 살아계신 하나님께 구원받은 혼들을 제물로 드리는 제사를 드려야 할 것이다. 사람의 영혼이야말로 하나님의 형상대로 지어졌으니 복음을 통하여 죄를 씻고 성령으로 거룩하게 되어 영생을 받은 혼들은 당연히 하나님께 제물로 돌려드려야 하지 않겠는가?

     청교도들이 미국 땅에 정착하면서 온 땅에 복음의 씨를 뿌려 많은 혼들을 주님께 제물로 드린 것처럼 우리를 미국 땅에 보내셔서 우리로 하여금 기름진 음식을 먹고 힘을 내어 가장 귀한 영생의 열매를 추수하여 주님께 드림이 마땅하지 않겠는가? 물론 우리에게 주신 물질적인 축복에 대한 감사도 넘쳐야 할 것이다. 넘치는 물질이 영생의 열매를 거두는 일에 쓰여지기 때문이다. 올해 추수한 것에 대한 감사를 드리자! 영육 간에 우리에게 베푸신 축복을 어찌 계산할 수 있겠는가? 우리의 보물이 있는 곳에 우리의 마음도 있다(마 6:21)고 주님께서 말씀하셨다. 또한 주님께서는 땅에 보물을 쌓아두지 말고 하늘에 쌓아두라고 말씀하셨다. 영생의 열매를 추수하는 일에 재물을 투자할 때 하늘에 보물을 쌓게 된다. 이때에 우리의 마음이 항상 그곳에 있게 될 것이다. 이 소망을 가진 자마다 아브라함처럼 이 땅에서 순례자와 타국인처럼 하늘의 도성을 소망하며 살게 될 것이다. 하나님께 감사의 제사를 드리면서 하늘에서 있을 영원한 추수감사절을 바라보자!

Meditation: Psalms 136:1-26

Subject: Eternal Harvest

     Since the Protestant settled down in America and gave thanks to God for the first harvest, Thanksgiving Day has been established to give thanks to God every forth Thursday of November. Knowing how to give sincere thanks to God for giving them carnal food, they also began to sow the most precious spiritual seeds in all the earth for the harvest. They were willing to do the will of God: “Everyone to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of truth” (1Tim 2:4), for they came to America to have the freedom of faith escaping from the Roman Catholic that had persecuted them.

     There is very important word of the Lord Jesus which we have to meditate deeply in our heart: “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”(John 4:34) “And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.”(John 4:36) And he also said, “Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields.”(John 4:35) First of all, Lord Jesus wanted to rejoice eating meat after he harvested the fruit unto life eternal. We remember the poor days in Korea when our forefathers tighten up hungry stomachs overcoming hunger in the hope of harvesting rice sowing the best rice seed in the field. How much hungry Lord Jesus might be? He went to Samaria from Judea on foot. His disciples were so busy to get the foods to fill their hunger. But Lord Jesus almost forgot hunger expecting sowing the seed and the harvest. The hope of harvest might be able to fill his hunger.

     Harvest is to reap the fruit several months after sowing the seeds, 30 folds, 60 folds or 100 folds. Lord Jesus is talking about the fruit unto the eternal life. He was going to harvest all the souls into the barn in heaven through sowing the seed of eternal life in the heart of a woman. Long time ago, a Psalmist prophesized, “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”(Ps 126:6)

     Apostle Paul also testified of the harvest unto the life eternal: “That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.”(Rom 15:16) He means to save the souls through the gospel and to give them offering unto God. In Korea, secular people still give offering of their harvest unto their forefathers in the day of Moon Festival every year. No more giving offering unto dead men, we are to give living offering unto living Father God. The souls of men whose sins cleansed through the gospel and sanctified by the Spirit to have the eternal life should be given offering unto God, since they were created in the image of God.

     As the Protestants sow the seed of the gospel in all the earth and made offering the souls unto God dwelling in America, we also have to dedicate ourselves to harvest unto the life eternal since we also were sent to America by God. Of course we also have to give thanks for material blessing from the Lord, which can be used for the harvest of souls unto life eternal. Let us give thanks for the harvest this year. How can we count the blessing given unto us? For where our treasure is, there will our heart be also (Mat. 6:21) Lord Jesus asked not to lay up our treasure for ourselves upon earth, but in heaven. When we invest our treasures in the harvest of the fruit unto the life eternal, our treasures shall be laid up in heaven. Then our heart shall be always therein also. Whosoever has this kind of hope shall live in the hope of the city in haven as pilgrim and strange as Abraham. Let us look forward the eternal Thanksgiving Day in heaven giving thanksgiving offering unto God!
