성시: 시편 133:1-3

본문: 역대기상 4:9-10

제목: 하나님을 기쁘시게 한 야베스의 기도

     유다 지파의 후손들을 열거하는 가운데 그 후손 중의 한 사람이었던 야베스에 관해서는 단순히 이름만 나열한 것이 아니라 그가 하나님께 드린 기도와 함께 그 기도가 모두 응답되었고 그는 다른 형제들보다  더 존귀한 자라고 말씀하신다:

“야베스가 이스라엘의 하나님을 부르며, 말하기를 ‘오, 주께서 정녕 나를 복 주시고 나의 지경을 넓혀주시기를 기뻐하시며, 주의 손이 나와 함께 하시고, 주께서 나를 악에서 지켜주시어 나로 근심하지 않게 하소서!’ 하니. 하나님께서 그가 요청하는 것을 허락하셨더라.”(대상 4:10)

    야베스의 기도를 하나님께서 모두 응답하셨고 또한 그의 기도 내용이 유일하게 기록된 것을 보면 분명히 그의 기도가 하나님의 뜻대로 드린 기도임이 틀림없으며 동시에 하나님을 기쁘시게 한 기도임을 알 수 있는 것이다. 본문에서 그에 대한 내용이 짤막하게 소개 되었는 바, “야베스는 그의 형제들보다 더 존귀하였으니 그의 어머니가 그의 이름을 부르며 말하기를 ‘내가 그를 슬픔으로 낳았기 때문이라.”하였다.

그는 분명히 슬픔의 사람이었으며 앞으로 유다 지파에서 나타나실 슬픔의 사람이신 그리스도를 연상케 한다. 선지자 이사야는 그분에 대하여 증거했다:

“그는 사람들에게서 멸시받고 거부되었으며 슬픔의 사람이요 질고에 익숙한 사람이라. 우리가 우리의 얼굴을 그로부터 숨긴 것같이 그는 멸시를 받았고 우리는 그를 존중하지 아니하였도다.”(사 53:3)

     그렇다! 유자 지파에서 태어나신 분 중에 가장 슬픔을 당하셨던 분은 사람의 몸을 입고 오신 예수 그리스도이심에 틀림없을 것이다. 이 사실을 통하여 성령님의 인도함을 받을 때에 야베스의 기도는 앞으로 그리스도께서 죄인들을 위하여 아버지께 간구하신 기도와 일치함을 볼 수 있는 것이다.

    야베스의 기도가 어떻게 하나님의 기쁘시게 하였는지 상고해 보면서 이 세상에 속하지 않고 슬픔을 당하며 이 세상을 살아가는 그리스도인이 드려야할 응답받는 기도에 대하여 깨닫는다면 더 큰 축복이 될 것이다.

     첫째로, 야베스는 “오, 주께서 나를 정녕 복 주시고”라고 기도했다. 하나님께서 아브라함을 부르셨을 때에 “내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루게 할 것이며 네게 복을 주고 네 이름을 위대하게 하리니, 너는 복이 되리라. 너를 축복하는 자들에게 내가 복을 주고 너를 저주하는 자를 저주하리라.  네 안에서 땅의 모든 족속들이 복을 받을 것이라.”말씀하셨다 (창 12:2-3)

그렇다면, 하나님께서 사람들에게 주시는 복은 무엇인가? 다윗 왕은 그의 시편을 통하여 증거했다:

“보라, 형제들이 하나 되어 함께 거하는 것이 얼마나 좋고 얼마나 기쁜가! 그것은 마치 머리 위의 값진 향유가 수염, 곧 아론의 수염으로 흘러서 그의 옷깃까지 내려가는 것과 같고 헤르몬의 이슬 같으며 시온의 산들 위에 내리는 이슬 같도다. 거기에서 주께서 복을 명하셨으니, 곧 영원무궁한 생명이로다.”(시 133;1-3)

그렇다! 하나님께서 사람들에게 주시는 복은 영원한 셍명인 것이다.

     사도 바울도 성령을 통하여 이 사실을 깨닫고 증거했다:

“그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 저주가 되셔서 율법의 저주로부터 우리를 구속하셨으니 기록되기를 ‘나무에 매달린 자는 누구나 저주받은 자라.’고 하였도다. 이는 아브라함의 복이 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 이방인들에게 미치게 함이며 또 우리로 하여금 믿음으로 말미암아 성령의 약속을 받게 하려는 것이라.”(갈 3:13-14)

     예수 그리스도께서도 자신을 찾아온 바리새인 니코데모에게 친히 이 복을 받는 비결에 대해 말씀하셨다:

“하나님께서 세상을 이처럼 사랑하셔서 그의 독생자를 주셨으니, 이는 그를 믿는 사람은 누구든지 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라.”(요 3;16)

     둘째로, 야베스는 “나의 지경을 넓혀 주시기를 기뻐하시며”라고 기도하면서 그의 지경을 넓혀주시는 것이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하심을 확신하였다. 유다 지파이며 야베스의 자손인 갈렙도 여호수아에게 “이 산을 나에게 주소서”라고 지경을 넓혀줄 것을 요청하여 헤브론을 유업으로 받았다 (수 14:1

2-13).오래 전 아브라함이 약속의 땅 가나안 땅에 거하고 있었고 그의 조카 롯이 떠난 후에 하나님께서 아브람에게 지경을 넓혀주시는 약속을 하셨다:

“이제 네 눈을 들어 네가 있는 곳에서부터 북쪽과 남쪽과 동쪽과 서쪽을 바라보라. 이는 네가 보는 모든 땅을 내가 네게 줄 것이며, 네 씨에게 영원히 주고 내가 네 씨를 땅의 티끌 같게 할 것임이니, 사람이 땅의 티끌을 셀 수 있다면 네 씨도 셀 수 있으리라. 일어나서 그 땅을 가로와 세로로 걸으라. 내가 그것을 네게 주겠음이라.”(창 13:14-17)

히브리서 기자는 하나님의 기쁘시게 함이 무엇인지 확실하게 증거했다:“그러나 믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 었나니, 하나님께 나아가는 자는 그분이 존재하시는 것과 그분이 자기를 열심히 찾는 자들에게 보상하는 분이심을 마땅히 믿어야 하느니라.”(히 11:6)

주님께서도 므나 비유를 통하여 므나를 남긴 수만큼의 고을들을 다스리는 권세를 주실 것을  분명하게 말씀하셨다(눅 19:12-19)

     셋째로, 야베스는 “주의 손이 나와 함께 하시고”라고 기도했다. 역시 유다 지파의 후손이며 장차 오실 그리스도의 모형이었던 다윗은 그의 손으로 항상 지켜주시기를 기뻐하시는 하나님에 대해 증거했다:  

“오 주여 주께서는 나를 살펴보셨으며 또 나를 아셨나이다. 주께서는 나의 앉고 서는 것을 아시며 나의 생각을 멀리서도 이해하시나이다. 주께서는 나의 길과 나의 눕는 것을 샅샅이 아시며 나의 모든 길들을 익히 아시나이다. 보소서, 오 주여, 주께서는 나의 앞뒤에서 감싸셨고 내게 안수하셨나이다.”(시 139:1-5)

주의 손이 항상 함께 하실 때에 때로는 죄악이 드러나게 되어 징계를 받을 수도 있지만 그것을 통하여 거룩하게 되기를 원하시는 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫고 기도하였던 것이다.

     넷째로, 야베스는 “주께서 나를 악에서 지켜주시어 나로 근심하지 않게 하소서.”라고 기도했다. 주님께서 제자들에게 기도를 가르치실 때에 “우리를 시험에 들지 않게 하시옵고, 악에서 구하여 주시옵소서.”(마 6:13)라는 말씀 가운데에도 악에서 구해달라는 기도를 하나님께서 받으신다는 사실을 알 수 있는 것이다. 사도 베드로도 성령께서 오신 오순절에 이스라엘 사람들에게 동일한 내용을 증거했다:

“회개하라. 그리고 죄들을 사함받은 것으로 인하여 너희 각 자는 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 침례를 받으라. 그리하면 너희가 성령을 선물로 받으리라. 이 약속은 너희와 너희 자녀들에게 한 것이며, 또한 먼 곳에 있는 모든 사람, 즉 우리 하나님께서 부르실 모든 사람에게 하신 것이라.’고 하더라. 또 여러 가지 다른 말로 증거하고 권고하하기를 ‘너희는 이 사악한 세대로부터 구원을 받으라.’”(행 2:38-40)

     하나님께서 가장 기뻐받으시는 기도를 드림으로써 응답받는 축복을 누리며 살지 않겠는가? 할렐루야!

Meditation: psalms 133:1-3

Subject: Jabez’s prayer that pleased God

     Listing the descendants of the tribe of Judah, Jabez was one of them. For him, not only his name was listed, but also his prayer that received answer from God. He was more honorable than his brethren:

“And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.”(1Chron. 4:10)

     Knowing that all his prayers were heard by God, and only his prayers were recorded in the scripture, his prayers must have pleased God according to the His will.  The main passage introduced about him very shortly saying, “Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.”

He was a man of sorrow, and he reminds us of Christ that was the man of sorrow to be born of the tribe of Judah. Prophet Isaiah testified of Him:

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”(Isa. 53:3)

     Yes! Jesus Christ must be the very man that received the most sorrow in the tribe of Judah. Being led by the Holy Spirit through this fact, Jabez’s prayer seems to agree to the Lord’s Prayer that was given to the Father for the sinners.

     Meditating how the prayers of Jabez and Christ pleased the Father God, it shall be blessing, if we understand the right prayer to the eyes of God.

    Firstly, Jabez prayed saying, “Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed”  When LORD God called Abram, said to him:

  ^“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.”(Gen. 12:2-3)

Then what is the blessing of God to be given unto man? King David testified through his psalm:

   ^“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.”(Ps 133:1-3)

Yes! It is the everlasting life that is given to man by God.

     Apostle Paul understood this truth, and testified:

   ^1”Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”(Gal. 3:13-14)

Jesus Christ said unto Nicodemus, one of Pharisees of how he could receive this blessing when he visited him:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”(John 3:16)

     Secondly, Jabez prayed saying,  “Enlarge my coast”  He was convinced that God wanted to enlarge his coast. Caleb, one of descendants of Jabez in the tribe of Judah asked Joshua saying, “Now therefore give me this mountain.”(Josh. 14:12-13), and he received Hebron for an inheritance.  Long time ago, God promised Abraham to enlarge his coast in Canaan after Lot, his nephew departed from him:

^“And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:   For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. “(Gen 13:14-17)

The writer of book of Hebrews testified of what is the thing that pleases God very clearly: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”(Heb. 11:6)

Jesus also testified of ruling authority over cities as many as mina (pound) gained through the parable of mina (pound) (Luke 19:12-19)

     Thirdly, Jabez prayed saying, “Thine hand might be with me.” King David that was also a descendant of Judah as well as the model of Christ to come testified of God that please to protect his people by His hands:

   ^“O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. “(Ps 139:1-5)

When the hands of the Lord are with him, he could be chastened by him because of his sins, but he understood the will of God to make him holy.

     Fourthly, Jabez prayed saying,  “Thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!”  Lord Jesus also taught his disciples to pray saying, “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”(Matt. 6:13)

Apostle Peter also testified of the same message in the day of Pentecost:

   ^“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. “(Acts 2:38-40)

     What about having blessed life through the prayers that please the Lord to receive answers? Hallelujah!
