금주의 묵상: 시편 51:1-19

본문: 요한복음 4:1-42

제목: 그리스도를 만나 전도자가 된 사마리아 여인

     주님께서는 갈릴리로 가시는 길에 사마리아를 거쳐 먼 길을 가셔야만 했다. 마침내 주님께서는 수칼이라는 사마리아의 한 성읍에 도착하셔서 야곱의 우물 곁에서 앉으셔서 피곤한 몸을 쉬신다. 그때 시간이 우리 시간으로 정오쯤 되는 시간이었다. 제자들은 시장하여 음식을 사기 위하여 성읍으로 갔고 주님께서는 그곳에 그대로 앉아계신다.

     그때 한 사마리아 여인이 물을 길러 온다. 그런데 주님께서 그 여인에게 “마실 물을 좀 달라.”며 말을 건내신다. 그러나 그 여인은 주님과 대화하기를 꺼려한다. 당시에 유대인들과 사마리안인들과 전혀 교제가 없는 상황이기 때문이다. 그러나 주님께서는 그 여인에게 “만일 네가 하나님의 선물을 알고 또 마실 물을 좀 달라고 너에게 말한 이가 누구인 줄 알았더라면 그에게 구하였을 것이요, 그는 너에게 생수를 주었으리라.” 말씀하신다. 이번에는 그녀가 구하기만 하면 그냥 물이 아닌 생수(living water)를 주었을 것이라고 말씀하신다. 그러나 그 여인은 생수의 뜻을 알아듣지 못하고 여전히 우믈 물만 생각하면서 “주여, 당신은 물길을 그릇도 없고 이 우물은 깊은데 어디서 그 생수를 얻겠나이까?”라고 질문한다. 다시 말해서 주님께서는 영원한 생명을 구하기만 하면 주실텐데, 그 여인은 여전히 주님의 말을 깨닫지 못한다. 주님께서는 깨닫지 못하는 여인에게 계속해서 말씀하신다: ”이 물을 마시는 사람은 누구든지 다시 목마르려니와 내가 주는 물을 마시는 사람은 누구든지 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라. 그러나 내가 주는 물은 그 사람 안에서 영원한 생명으로 솟아오르는 샘물이 되리라.” 그럼에도 이 여인은 아직도 주님의 말씀을 깨닫지 못하고 계속 질문한다: “주여 그 물을 나에게도 주셔서, 내가 목마르지도 아니하고 여기에 물을 길으러 오지도 않도록 하옵소서.”

      주님께서는 유대인들에게 “성경을 상고하라. 이는 너희가 성경에 영생이 잇다고 생각함이니, 그 성경은 나에 관하여 증거하고 있음이라. 너희는 생명을 얻으려고 내게 오기를 원치 아니하느니라.”(요 5:39-40)고 말씀하셨다. 그들 역시 주님께서 주시는 생수가 무엇인지 깨닫지 못하여 그것을 구하지 않았다. 세상 사람들은 제쳐놓고 오늘날 그리스도인들은 어떠한가? 과연 얼마나 영원한 생명을 구하고 있는가? 얼마나 많은 크리스챤들이 세상의 썩어질 것만을 구하고 있는가? 마치 사마리아 여인이 육신의 몸에 필요한 물만을 생각하는 것처럼 말이다. 마음이 답답하신 주님께서는 장막절 마지막 큰 날에 예루살렘에서 외쳐 말씀하셨다: “누구든지 목마르거든 내게로 와서 마시라. 나를 믿는 자는 성경이 말씀한 것과 같이, 그의 배에서 생수의 강들이 흐르리라.”(요 7:37-38)

     다시 본문으로 돌아가서, 주님께서는 그녀에게 사람의 생각과는 엉뚱한 질문을 하신다: “가서 네 남편을 데려오라.” 주님께서는 이 여인에게 생수를 주시기 위하여 그녀가 죄를 회개하는 기회를 주신다. 그녀는 남편이 없다고 대답함으로써 자신의 죄를 고백했던 것이다. 다시 말해서 주님께서는 이 한 여인에게 영원 생명을 주셔야만 하셨기에 제자들에게 말씀도 하시지 않으시고 사마리아까지 먼 길을 가신 것이다. 만일 제자들이 주님의 뜻을 알았다면 그들 역시 주님과 함께 기다렸을 것이다. 그러나 그들은 썩을 양식을 구하는 일이 더 급했던 것이다. 그렇다면, 왜 주님께서 정욕에 사로잡혀 남편과 다섯 번이나 이혼한 여인을 만나 그녀에게 영원한 생명을 주시려 하셨는지 깊이 묵상해 보아야 하는 것이다. 25절에서 그 여인이 주님께 드리는 말을 통하여 주님께서 그 여인을 만나시기 위하여 먼 길을 걸어 피곤한 여정을 가지셨는지 쉽게 알 수 있는 것이다: “나는 그리스도라 하는 메시야가 오실 줄을 아니이다. 그분이 오시면 우리에게 모든 일들을 말씀해 주실 것이니이다.” 그렇다!  그녀는 영원한 남편이 되실 그리스도를 기다렸던 것이다. 세상 사람들의 눈에는 그녀가 욕정에 사로잡힌 부정한 여인이라 손가락질 했을지 모르지만 주님의 눈에 그녀는 진정한 남편이 되어주실 그리스도를 사모하며 기다리는 그 여인을 만나셔서 그녀에게 자신이 오실 그리스도이신 메시야이심을 나타내셔야만 하셨던 것이다. 그녀의 마음은 어떤 사람도 알 수 없었기에 그 어떤 사람들과도 말을 섞지 않고 싶어 했기에 그녀는 아무도 오지 않는 대낮에 물을 길러 왔던 것이다. 이 세상의 어떤 남자도 그 여인에게 생수를 줄 수 없음을 알았기에, 또한 어떤 사람도 그녀의 영 안에 있는 빈 자리를 채워줄 수 없었기에 그 사실이 그 여인을 비참하게 만들었을 것이며 그 결과로 수 많은 남편괴 이혼하게 되었지만 오히려 그 비참한 인생살이가 그 여인으로 하여금 영원하신 메시야가 오심을 간절히 사모하게 하였던 것이다. 주님께서 유대인들에게 설교하실 때 “영이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니, 천국이 그들의 것임이요, 애통하는 자들은 복이 있나니, 그들이 위로를 받을 것임이요.”(마 5:3-4)라 말씀하셨다. 그녀가 남편으로부터 진정한 사랑을 받지 못하며 애통하며 살 때에 그 영이 얼마나 메말랐을까? 상상해 볼 수 있지 않겠는가?

결국은 그리스도께서 오셔서 자신의 모든 죄들을 위하여 죽으시고 부활하셔야만 자신의 모든 문제가 해결되고 그리스도의 생명을 받을 것을 그녀가 알았다면 죄인인 줄도 모르고 그녀를 음란하다고 판단하는 무리들을 볼 때 그 영의 깊은 곳에서 얼마나 애통하였을지 깊이 생각해 보아야 할 것이다.

     하나님 앞에서 온 세상이 유죄임을 사도 바울은 이렇게 증거했다: “의인은 없나니 없도다. 한 사람도 없도다. 깨닫는 자도 없고 하나님을 찾는 자도 없도다. 모두가 탈선하여 함께 무익하게 되었으며 선을 행하는 자도 없으니 없도다. 한 사람도 없도다. 그들이 목구멍은 열린 무덤이요, 그들이 자기 혀로는 속였으며 그들의 입술 아래는 독사의 독이 있고 그들의 입은 저주와 독설로 가득 차고….”(롬 3:10-14)

     그렇다! 오늘도 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 오신 성령님께서는 사마리아 여인처럼 비참한 죄인임을 깨닫고 자신의 죄 문제를 해결해 주시고 자신 안에 있는 빈 자리를 채워주실 그리스도를 기다리는 사람들에게 예수 그리스도를 나타내시기를 원하시는 것이다. 비록 지옥에 잠자리를 펴고 누워있는 사람일지라도 이 사마리아 여인처럼 자신의 비참함을 마음 깊히 깨닫고 처절하게 진리를 찾는 사람들에게 찾아가시는 것이다. 오늘도 성경말씀을 통하여 주님께서는 목마름을 채우려하는 사람들에게 끊임없이 생명수를 주시기 원하시는 것이다. 단 그들이 구하기만 하면 말이다.

    주님을 기다리고 있는 여인에게 마침내 주님께서는 자신을 나타내신다: “너와 말하고 있는 내가 그니라.” 그 순간 그 여인의 몸 안에 영원한 생수로 채워졌던 것이다. 모든 죄들을 한 순간의 고백으로 용서받음과 동시에 그 여인은 영원한 생명을 받은 것이다. 그녀가 받은 영원한 생명 안에 있는 기쁨이 그녀로 하여금 육신의 목마름을 완전히 잊어버리고 물동이를 버려 두고 성읍으로 들어갔던 것이다. 그녀는 즉시 성읍에 있는 사람들에게 그리스도를 증거했던 것이다: “와서 내가 행한 모든 일들을 나에게 말한 그 사람을 보라. 그분이 그리스도가 아닌가?” 그때 사람들이 성읍에서 나와 주께로 와서 주님을 영접하는 축복을 받게 된 것이다.

       당신은 아직도 다시 목마르게 하는 썩을 것을  추구하며 살고 있는가? 아니면 영원한 진리이신 그리스도를 찾았기에 그분께서 찾아오셔서 이 여인처럼 남편이 없음을 고백하여 모든 죄를 용서받고 영원한 생명을 받았는지? 영원한 생명을 받은 기쁨이 충만하여 이 여인처럼 그리스도를 전하여 영원한 생명에 이르는 열매들을 모으고 있는지? 오늘 본문 말씀을 통하여 깊히 생각해야 하는 축복된 기회를 주시는 것이다. 오늘 우리에게 “네 남편을 데려오라!”고 말씀하신다면 어떤 대답을 주님께 드릴 수 있는지 다시 한 번 생각하는 좋은 기회가 된다면 오늘이 바로 구원의 날이며 은혜 받는 축복의 기회가 될 것이다. 아벤! 할렐루야!

Meditation of the week: Psalms 51:1-19

Main scripture: John 4; 1-42

Subject: A Samaritan woman, called as an evangelist of Christ

       On the way to Galilee, Lord Jesus must need to go through Samaria. Then comes he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar. Jacob’s well was there, Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour that is noon time as our local time. His disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat; and Jesus is still sitting by the well.

       There comes a woman of Samaria to draw water. Then Jesus saith unto her, “Give me to drink.”  But she is reluctant to answer Jesus, for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. But Jesus continues to say to her: “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” This time, Jesus offers her to give her living water, if she asks him for it.  But she doesn’t understand of the living water, and asks him only thinking of the water from the well, “Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?”

Jesus continues to say to her without understanding of the living water, “ Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. “

She is still asking to Jesus not understanding his word, “Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.”

     Lord Jesus spoke unto the Jews, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. “(John 5:39-40)

They couldn’t ask the living water that is given by the Lord Jesus, for they don’t know about it. What about Christians setting aside Non-Christians? How many Christians are asking for the corruptible things in the world, as the Samaritan woman was only thinking of the water for her body? In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried unto the Jews with heart broken, “ If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. ⁸He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. “(John 7:37-38)

     Going back to the main passage (John chapter 4), The Lord Jesus asked her a question that seems to be weird to the natural man: “Go, call thy husband, and come hither.”

Jesus wanted to give the opportunity for her to repent her sins to give her living water that is the eternal life. And she repented her sin saying “I have no husband.” In other word, Jesus planned to give this woman eternal life so that he had to make a long Journey to Samaria not saying anything to his disciples. If his disciples had known the will of Jesus, they would have waited for her with Jesus. But they were so busy to search the corruptible meat. Then, now, we’d better meditate deeply why Jesus wanted to give the eternal life unto the so adulterous woman. We can have the answer through verse 25 why Jesus wanted to see the woman through her word spoken to Jesus not caring about weary journey: “I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.”

Yes! She was waiting for the Christ that is to be her eternal husband. To the eyes of the worldly people, she must be an adulterous woman totally possessed by the lusts. But to the eyes of Jesus, she was the one that was waiting for the sincere husband that is Christ. Therefore Jesus wanted to manifest himself unto her as the Messiah, the Christ. Why she went to the well to draw water at noon time instead cool evening? She might not want to mix her word with the people that couldn’t understand the thought in her heart. Knowing that any man in the world couldn’t give her satisfaction as living water, and no one could fill the empty place in her spirit, she must be so miserable so that she was ended up being divorced many times. But her miserable life led her to long for the Messiah that is eternal.

      The main passage reminds us of the preaching of Jesus unto the Jews:  “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. “(Matt. 5:3-4)

How much poverty in her spirit she might experience because the lack of love from her husband?  We can imagine this! If she had known the Christ that is to die for her sins and rise again to redeem her sins unto the eternal life, how much sorrow she must have been upon seeing the crowds judging her as an adulterous one?

     Apostle Paul testified of the world being guilty before God: “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness :…”(Rom. 3:10-14)

     Yes! The Holy Ghost that came in the name of Jesus Christ is still looking for them that are convicting their sins, and waiting for Christ that is to redeem their sins to fill the empty place in their heart. Even though they are lying in the hell, the Lord Jesus wants to go unto them that are looking for the truth desperately. Even today, the Lord Jesus still wants to give the living water unto them that want to fill their thirst through the word of God, only if they ask the Lord.

     Finally, the Lord Jesus manifested himself unto the woman:”I that speak unto thee am he.” At that moment, her body must be filled with the eternal living water. All her sins were forgiven at once through her confession to receive the eternal life. The joy in the eternal life made her forget carnal thirst; and she then left her water pot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men to testify of the Christ:

^“Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”

Then they went out of the city, and came unto the Lord Jesus to receive him.

     What are you still looking for, corruptible things that cannot end the thirst?  Or received the eternal life through confessing “I have no husband” unto the Lord Jesus, and receiving remission of sins as this woman?  And is the fullness of joy in the eternal life is enforcing you to reap the fruits unto the eternal life? Today’s message is giving us another chance of eternal blessing. If the Lord Jesus asks us saying, Go, call thy husband, and come hither, how you answer him? This is the reason why it is the day of salvation through grace. Amen! Hallelujah!
