금주의 묵상:시편 51:1-19

본문: 사도행전 17:22-31

제목: 죄사함과 구원에 이르게 하는 참된 회개

      사도 바울은 그리스 아테네 사람들에게 회개를 촉구하면서 그 이유에 대해 하나님께서 예수 그리스도를 통하여 세상을 심판하실 것을 설교하고 있다. 누구든지 하나님을 감지하려 하면 만날 수 있는 바 그분께서는 각 사람에게서 멀리 떨어져 계시지 않는다고 증거하고 있다. 또한 무지의 때에는 하나님께서 눈감아 주셨지만 이제는 어디에 살고 있는 어떤 사람에게도 회개하라고 명령하고 계신다고 증거하면서 앞으로 하나님께서 선정하신 사람이신 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 의로 세상을 심판하실 한 날을 정해 놓으시고 그분을 죽은 자들로부터 살리시어 모든 사람에게 확신을 주셨다고 선포하고 있는 것이다. 또한 본문을 통하여 성령께서 동일한 말씀을 우리들에게도 증거하시고 있는 것이다.

     사도 바울은 로마에 있는 사람들에게 편지할 때에도 죄많은 세상에 하나님의 진노가 게시되고 있음에 대해, “하나님의 진노가 불의 가운데서 진리를 붙잡는 사람들의 모든 불경건과 불의에 대하여 하늘로부터 계시되거니와 이는 하나님을 알만한 것이 그들 속에 나타나 있기 때문이라. 세상의 창조 때부터 그분에 속한 보이지 않는 것들이 분명히 보여졌고 심지어는 그분의 영원한 능력과 신격까지도 만들어진 것들에 의해 알려졌으므로 그들이 변명하지 못하느니라.”(롬 1:18-20)

하나님을 믿지 않는 사람들의 입에서도 “하나님 맙소사!’ 하는 말이나 “God damn!”이라는 말을 들을 때 무의식 속에서 그들의 양심이 심판하시는 하나님을 이미 알고 있음을 증거하고 있는 것이 아니겠는가?

     그렇다면, 회개란 무엇인가? 회개는 “다른 마음을 갖는것”, 또는 “마음을 바꾸는 것”을 의미하는 헬라어 단어(메타노이아-메타노에노)를 번역한 것이며 신약에서는 죄와 하나님과 자신에 대해서 마음을 바꾸는 것을 가리키는 말로 사용된다. 죄에 빠져 사는 사람이 회개하는 마음이 생길 때에 우선 먼저 죄에 대하여 슬픈 마음이 생기게 되어 그 슬픈 마음이 회개에 이르게 할 수 있지만 그 자체는 회개라 할 수 없는 것이다. 사도 바울은 이에 대하여 증거했다:

“이제 내가 기뻐하는 것은 너희가 슬퍼하게 된 것 때문이 아니요, 너희가 슬퍼하여 회개에 이른 것 때문이라. 너희가 하나님의 방식에 따라 슬퍼하게 된 것은 우리로 인하여 아무런 피해도 입지 않게 하려 함이라. 하나님의 뜻대로 하는 슬픔은 구원을 위한 회개에 이르게 하므로 후회할 것이 없느니라. 그러나 세상의 슬픔은 사망에 이르느니라.”(고후 7:9,10)

     그렇다! 성령께서는 사도 바울을 통하여 회개가 구원에 이르게 하는 첫째 관문인 것을 말씀하고 있는 것이다. 그렇다면 구원에 이르게 하는 회개란 무엇인가? 유대인의 왕이신 예수님께서 이스라엘에 오시는 길을 예비하는 일을 맡은 침례인 요한은  유대 광야에서 “회개하라. 천국이 가까이 왔느니라,”(마 3:1,2)고 외쳤다. 그때에 예루살렘과 온 유대와 요단 강 주의의 모든 지역에서 그에게 나아와, 자기들의 죄들을 자백하고 요단 강에서 그에게 침례를 받았다. 그러나 그가 많은 바리새인들과 사두개인이 그의 침례 베푸는 데 오는 것을 보고 그들에게 ‘오 독사들의 세대야, 누가 너희에게 다가오는 진노에서 피하라고 경고하더냐? 그러므로 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺고 ‘아브라함이 우리의 조상이라.’고 너희 속으로 말하려 생각지 말라. 내가 너희에게 말하노니, 하나님께서 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손이 되게 하실 수 있느니라. 또한 이제 도끼가 나무 뿌리에 놓였으니, 그러므로 좋은 열매를 맺지 못하는 나무마다 찍혀 불 속에 던져지리라.”(마 3:7-10)고 외쳤다. 그들은 입술로만 회개하겠다고 하면서 죄를 뉘우치고 모든 죄들을 벗어버릴 결심을 하지 않았던 것이다. 다시 말해서 회개에 따르는 합당한 열매를 맺지 않았던 것이다.

     그러나 요한에게 나온 무리들은 그에게  “그러면 우리가 어떻게 하여야 하리이까?”라고 물었을 때 그가 대답하기를 “두 벌 옷을 가진 자는 없는 자에게 나누어 주고 음식물을 가진 자도 그렇게 할지니라.”고 말했다. 또한 세리들도 와서 물었을 때, “너희에게 정해진 것 외에는 더 거두지 말라.” 병사들도 와서 물었을 때, “아무도 억압하지 말고 거짓되이 고소하지 말며 너희의 급료로 만족하라.”고 말했다 (눅 3:10-14). 그렇다! 세리나 병사들 같은 무리들은 그 동안 그들이 지었던 죄들로부터 돌이킴으로써 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺고자 했던 것이다. 여기에서 우리는 진정한 회개가 무엇인지 깨달을 수 있는 것이다. 진정한 회개란 죄로부터 완전히 돌이키는 이른 바 “U-Turn”(180도 돌이키는 것)인 것이다.

     주님께서도 두 아들의 비유를 통해서 진정한 회개가 어떤 것인지 말씀하셨다:

“그러나 너희는 어떻게 생각하느냐? 어떤 사람에게 두 아들이 있었는데, 첫째에게 가서 말하기를 ‘아들아, 오늘 내 포도원에 가서 일하라.’고 하니 그가 대답하여 말하기를 ‘아니가겠나이다.’라고 하더니 나중에 뉘우치고 갔으며, 둘째 아들에게도 가서 그와 같이 말하니, 그가 대답하여 말하기를 ‘예, 아버지. 가겠나이다.’라고 하고는 가지 아니하였느니라. 그 둘 중에 누가 그 아버지의 뜻을 행하였느냐?’’라고 하시니, 그들이 주께 말씀하시기를 ‘첫째이니이다.’라고 하니, 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하시기를  ‘진실로 내가 너희에게 말하노니, 세리들과 창녀들이 너희보다 먼저 하나님의 나라에 들어갈 것이니라. 이는 요한이 의의 길로 너희에게 왔으나 너희가 그를 믿지 아니하였기 때문이라. 그러나 세리들과 창녀들은 그를 믿었느니라. 너희는 보고 나서도 뉘우치지 아니하였으며, 또 그를 믿지도 아니하였느니라.”(마 21:28-32)

     요한이 감옥에 갇힌 후, 예수께서 갈릴리로 오셔서 하나님의 나라의 복음을 전파하시면서 “그 때기 찼고 하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔도다. 너희는 회개하고 복음을 믿으라.”고 말씀하셨다. 다시 말해서 우리의 죄를 위하여 죽으심으로써 모든 율법의 저주로부터 구원하신 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 자는 반드시 회개해야 할 것을 말씀하신 것이다. 회개와 믿음을 통하여 주 예수 그리스도를 영접하게 됨으로써 성령으로 거듭나게 되어 그 영이 거듭나서 하나님의 자녀로서 하나님의 나라에 들어가게 되는 것이다 (요 1:12, 요 3:3,5,6)

     부활하신 주님께서 마지막으로 제자들에게 하신 말씀 속에서도 다시 한 번 회개를 통해서만 죄를 용서받을 수 있음을 알 수 있다: “’이런 것이 내가 너희와 함께 있을 때 말했던 바 모세의 율법과 선지서들과 시편에 나에 관하여 기록된 모든 것이 이루어져야 한다던 그 말이니라.’고 하시고 그때 그들의 지각을 열어 성경을 깨닫게 하시니라. 또 그들에게 말씀하시기를 ‘그리스도가 고난을 당하는 것과 죽은 자들로부터 셋째 날에 살아나는 것이 기록되었으며, 또 그렇게 되어야 마땅하니라. 예루살렘에서 시작하여 모든 민족 가운데 그의 이름으로 회개와 죄사함이 선포되어야 하리라. 너희가 이런 일의 증인이니라.”(눅 24:44-48)

     그러면, 우리들은 어떤 죄들로부터 돌이켜서 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺어야 하는가? 참된 회개를 한 사람은  세상으로부터 완전히 돌이켜서 하나님 나라로 들어간 사람을 말한다. 다시 말하면 심판받을 세상과는 상관이 없는 사람들인 것이다. 그런 사람들은 세상에 속한 것들을 더 이상 사랑하지 않는 사람들이다. 이 세상은 죄로 가득찬 사악한 곳이기 때문이다. 이런 사람들은 세상으로부터 박해를 받을 수밖에 없는 것이다. 이에 대해 주님께서 말씀하셨다: “세상이 너희를 미워하면 그것은 너희를 미워하기 이전에 나를 미워한 것임을 알라. 만일 너희가 세상에 속한다면 세상은 자기 사람들을 사랑할 것이라. 그러나 너희는 세상에 속한 자가 아니요 내가 너희를 세상으로부터 선택하였느니라. 이로 인하여 세상이 너희를 미워하느니라.”(요 15:18,19).

     그러므로 회개하여 죄사함 받고 구원받은 사람이 세상을 사랑하면 하나님께 간음함으로써 하나님의 나라에서 상속받을 것이 없게 됨을 명심해야 할 것이다 (엡 5:5): “너희 간음하는 남자들과 여자들아, 세상과 친구가 되는 것이 하나님과 원수되는 것을 알지 못하느냐? 그러므로 누구든지 세상의 친구가 되고자 하는 자는 하나님과 원수가 되느니라.”(약 4:4)

사도 요한은 마지막 때에 살고 있는 우리들에게 권면하고 있다: “세상도, 세상에 있는 것들도 사랑하지 말라. 누구든지 세상을 사랑하면 아버지를 사랑함이 그 안에 있지 아니하니 이는 세상에 있는 모든 것이 육심의 정욕과 안목의 정욕과 생의 자랑이요, 아버지께 속한 것이 아니라 세상에 속한 것이기 때문이라. 세상도, 세상의 정욕도 사라지지만 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 자는 영원히 거하느니라.”(요일 2:15-17)

Meditation of the week: Psalms 51:1-19

Subject: True repentance unto the remission of sins, and salvation

     Apostle Paul encouraged the people in Athens, Greece to repent, and testified of the day of judgment of God toward the world through Jesus Christ. He said that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after God, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us; and that the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commends all men everywhere to repent: because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man, Jesus Christ whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he heat raised him from the dead. Through the main passage, the Holy Ghost is giving us the same message.

     Apostle Paul also revealed the wrath of God toward the wicked world to the saints in Rome:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”(Rom. 1:18-20)

We hear from the mouth of unbelievers saying, “Oh! No God!” or “God damn!” this proves that their conscience testifies of God, the Judge in their unconsciousness.

     Then what is repentance? According to the Greek word (Metanoia-metanoeno), this means to have different mind or to change the mind. In the New Testament, it means to change the mind toward sin and God and oneself. Whenever man living in sins feel like to repent through the mind of sorrow because of sins; the sorrow could lead man to repentance, but sorrow itself is not repentance. Apostle Paul testified of this:

“Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. “(2Cor. 7:9,10)

     Yes! The Holy Ghost is teaching us that repentance is the first door unto salvation through Apostle Paul. Then what is the repentance unto salvation? John the Baptist cried out to the Jew, “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” To prepare the way of the king of the Jew unto Israel (Matt. 3:1,2) Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan; and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them:

“O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. “(Matt. 3:7-10)

They confessed of repentance only with their lips not repenting their sins to turn away from sins. In other word, they didn’t want to bear the fruits meet for repentance.

     Other people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?” He answered and said unto them, “He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.” Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, “Master, what should we do?” And he said unto them, “Exact no more than that which is appointed you.” And soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, “And what shall we do?” And he said unto them, “Do violene to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages.”(Luke 3:10-14)

Yes! People like publicans and soldiers wanted to bear the fruits meet for repentance turning away from their sins. We learn what is the true repentance from them, that is the totally U-Turn from sins at 180 degrees.

     The Lord Jesus teaches us about true repentance through the parable of two sons:

“But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.”(Matt. 21:28-32)

     After that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.   In other word, he encouraged to repent whosoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ that died for our sins to deliver from the curse of the law. Then through repentance and faith, we receive him to be born again of the Spirit to enter into the kingdom of God (John 1:12; 3:3,5,6)

     We understand that remission of sins is only through repentance. Jesus spoke to his disciples of this after resurrection:

“And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.”(Luke 24:44-48)

     Then, what kind of sins we have to turn away to bear the fruits meet for repentance? They that repent truly turn away from the world to enter into the kingdom of God. In other word, they have nothing to do with the world under judgment. They no more love the things belong to the world, for the world is full of wickedness. They are to be persecuted by the world. Jesus testified of this:

“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. “(John 15:18,19)

     Therefore, if they that repented to receive the remission of sins love the world again, lose the inheritance in the kingdom of God, for they already committed adultery (Eph. 5:5)

^“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”(James 4:4)

     Apostle John encouraged us living in the end time:

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. “(1John 2:15-17)
