금주의 묵상: 시편 130:1-8

본문: 사도행전 10:1-48

제목: 하나님을 간절히 찾아 성령으로 거듭난 고넬료

       옛날 다윗왕이 자기 아들 솔로몬에게 “너, 내 아들 솔로몬아, 너는 네 아버지의 하나님을 알라. 그리고 온전한 마음과 기쁜 뜻으로 그분을 섬기라. 주께서는 모든 마음을 살피시고 생각의 모든 상상을 아시나니, 만일 네가 그분을 찾으면 만날 것이나, 만일 네가 그분을 버리면 그가 너를 영원히 버리시리라.”(대상 28:9)고 충고했다.

      사도 바울도 로마에 있는 성도들에게 편지할 때, “하나님의 진노가 불의 가운데서 진리를 붙잡는 사람들의 모든 불경건과 불의에 대하여 하늘로부터 계시되거니와 이는 하나님을 알만한 것이 그들 속에 나타나 있기 때문이니 하나님께서 그것을 그들에게 보이셨음이라. 세상의 창조 때부터 그분에 속한 보이지 않는 것들이 분명히 보여졌고 심지어는 그분의 영원한 능력과 신격까지도 만들어진 것들에 의해 알려졌으므로 그들이 변명하지 못하느니라.”(롬 1:18-20)고 증거했다.

       오늘 본문에 나오는 고넬료는 로마 군대의 백부장으로서 그 당시까지만 해도 이방 죄인이었지만 하나님을 두려워하여 온 집안과 더불어 경건한 생활을 하며 백성을 많이 구제하며 하나님께 항상 기도했다. 어떻게 그가 하나님을 알지도 못하면서 그렇게 할 수 있었겠는가? 바로 사도 바울이 증거한 것처럼 “하나님을 알만한 것”이 그의 마음 속에 있었기 때문이었다. 이것은 비단 고넬료 뿐만 아니라 모든 사람들에게도 있다고 성경은 말씀하시고 있는 것이다.

       그가 구시경에 기도하고 있을 때, 하나님께서 그의 천사를 보내셨다. 다윗이 아들 솔로몬에게 충고한 것처럼 그는 하나님을 찾으면 만날 수 있다고 믿었기에 시간을 정해 놓고 알지도 못하는 하나님께 기도하면서 하나님께서 창조하신 사람들을 구제하면서 경건한 삶을 살고 있었던 것이다. 마침내 하나님께서 그의 기도에 응답하신 것이다. “너의 기도와 구제가 하나님 앞에 이르러 기억함이 되었노라.”(행 10:4) 하나님께서는 사도 베드로를 보내셔서 그에게 예수 그리스도의 복음을 듣게 하시려고 게획하셧다. 고넬료의 하인들이 베드로를 만나기 위하여 성읍에 다달았을 때에 베드로가 육시 경에 기도할 때에 환상 가운데서 하나님께서 말씀하심으로써 율법에 부정한 짐승들(이방인들)도 하나님께서 깨끗하게 하시면 깨끗하게 된다는 말씀을 주신 것이다.

     마침내 고넬료의 하인들이 베드로에게 도착하였을 때 하나님께서 베드로에게 “일어나서 내려가 아무 것도 의심하지 말고 그들과 함께 가라. 내가 그들을 보냈음이라.”고 말씀하셨다.   베드로를 맞이한 고넬료는 그의 발 앞에 엎드려 경배할 정도로 하나님을 사모했던 것이다. 베드로가 그가 하는 것을 만류한 후에 고넬료는 자신이 나흘 전까지 금식하고 제구시에 집에서 기도하고 있을 때 천사를 만나 일어난 일을 고했다. 고넬료는 이미 하나님의 말씀을 들으려고 모든 집안 사람들을 모아놓고 하나님께서 베드로를 통하여 주신 말씀을 들으려고 기다리고 있었다. 그들 모두는 하나님을 만날 모든 준비가 되어 있었던 것이다.

       이때에 베드로가 입을 열어 하나님의 말씀을 전하기 시작했다: “참으로 내가 깨달은 것은 하나님께서는 사람을 외모로 취하지 않으시고 어느 민족에게서나 자기를 두려워하고 의를 행하는 사람은 받아주신다는 것이라. 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손에게 보내신 말씀은 예수 그리스도를 통한 화평을 전하는 것이라. (그는 모든 것의 주시라.) 내가 말하노니 너희도 알거니와 그 말씀은 요한이 전파한 침례 이후에 갈맇리에서 시작하여 온 유대에 두루 전파되었으며 하나님께서 나사렛 예수께 성령과 능력으로 기름부어 주셔서 그분이 두루 다니시면서 선한 일을 행하시며 마귀에게 억업받는 모든 자를 치유하셨으니 이는 하나님께서 그분과 함께 계심이라. 우리는 그분이 유대인들의 땅과 예루살렘에서 행하신 모든 일의 증인이라. 그들이 그분을 죽여서 나무에 매달았으나 하나님께서 그분을 셋째 날에 살리셔서 드러나게 보여주셨으니 모든 백성에게 하신 것이 아니요 하나님께서 미리 택하신 증인들에게 하신 것이니 곧 그분께서 죽은 자들로부터 살아나신 후 그분과 함께 먹고 마신 우리에게 하신 것이라. 그리하여 주께서 우리에게 명령하사 사람들에게 전파하게 하시고, 또 하나님께서 산 자와 죽은 자의 심판자로 지정하신 분이 바로 그분임을 증거하게 하셨느니라. 그분에 대하여 모든 선지자도 증거하기를 ‘누구든지 그를 믿는 자는 그의 이름으로 말미암아 죄들의 사함을 받으리라.’고 하였느니라.”(행 10:34-43)

       베드로가 이런 말을 하고 있을 때에 성령께서 그 말씀을 듣는 모든 사람에게 임하셨다. 그러므로 ㅂㅂ베드로와 함께 온 할레받은 믿는 자들이 성령의 선물을 이방인들에게도 부어주심을 보고 놀라니, 이는 그들이 성령을 받고 방언으로 말하며 하나님을 높이는 것을 들었기 때문이었다. . 이때에 베드로는 그들 모두가 주의 이름으로 침례 받을 것을 명하여 그들 모두는 성령을 받아 거듭난 즉시 물로 침례를 받았던 것이다. 주님께서 베드로의 신앙고백을 들으셨을 때에 그에게 천국의 열쇠들을 주시겠다 (마 16:19)고 약속하신대로 첫번 째 열쇠로 오순절 날 많은 유대인들을 천국으로 인도하였으며, 이번에는 이방인들을 천국으로 인도하기 위하여 두 번째 열쇠를 사용하게 된 것이다.

       베드로는 간단하게 사도 바울이 전한 그리스도의 복음 즉, “성경대로 그리스도께서 우리의 죄들로 인하여 죽으시고 장사되셨다가 성경대로 셋째 날에 살아나신 것”(고전 15:3,4)에 대하여 간단하게 말하였을 뿐인데 모인 사람들이 하나님의 말씀을 들으려고 하나님 앞에 모여있음으로 인하여 하나님께서는 그들의 중심을 보시고 성령께서 그들 모두에게 임하심으로써 그들 모두가 예수 그리스도를 주로 시인하여 믿음으로 그 날에 모두가 구원을 받아 성령으로 거듭나게 되었던 것이다. 사도 바울이 “내가 예수 그리스도와 그의 십자게에 못박히심 외에는 너희 가운데서 아무 것도 알지 아니하기로 작정하였음이라. 내가 너희와 함께 있을 때에 연약함과 두려움과 심한 떨림 가운데 있었노라. 또 내 말과 내 설교를 설득력 있는 인간의 지혜의 말로 하지 아니하고 성령과 능력을 나타냄으로 하였으니 이는 너희의 믿음이 인간의 지헤에 있게 하지 아니하고 하나님의 능력에 있게 하려 함이라.”(고전 2:2-5)고 고백한 것도 이 때문이었던 것이다.

       주일마다 교회에 나올 때에 어떤 마음으로 오는가? 진정으로 하나님 앞에서 그분의 말씀을 들으려고 오는가? 아니면, 종교의식처럼 잠간 에배만 드리고 가기 위함인가? 하나님께서는 모든 사람의 중심을 보시고 계심을 잊지 말고 그분을 두려워해야 하는 것이다. 누구든지 교회에 나오는 사람들은 고넬료 같은 마음으로 나와야 구원을 받는 축복을 받게 되는 것이다. 사도 베드로는 고넬료와 그의 집안 사람들이 성령을 받은 것을 기억하면서 유대인들에게 “마음을 아시는 하나님께서는 우리에게 행하신 것과 마찬가지로 그들에게도 증거하시어 성령을 주셨으며 우리와 그들 사이에 어떤 차이도 두지 아니하였으니 믿음으로 그들의 마음을 정결케 하셨느니라.”(행 15:8,9)고 증거했다. 아멘! 할렐루야!

Meditation of the week:  Psalms 130:1-8

Subject: Cornelius seek the Lord to be born again of the Sopirit

       King David advised to his son, Solomon saying,   ^9”And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.”(1Chron. 28:9)

       Apostle Paul wore a epistle to the saints in Rome saying, ^“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”(Rom. 1:18-20)

      Cornelius was a centurion of Roman army; and he feared God with his entire house, and lived in godliness; and he gave much alms to the people; and prayed to God always. How could he pray to God even not knowing God? It was because that in him was manifest of God, according to Apostle Paul. Not only Cornelius, but everyone has the same manifest of God within them according to the scriptures.

      When he was praying to God, God sent his angel in a vision. As King David advised to his son, Solomon, he must have believed that he could find God when he seeks him. Therefore he set a time for prayer, and gave alms to the people that were created by God, and lived in godliness. Finally, God answered to his prayer: “Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.” God sent Apostle Peter to him so that Cornelius hears the gospel of Jesus Christ. When his house servants arrived at the city where Peter was staying, God spoke to Peter in a vision when he prayed to God saying, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.”

       Finally, when the servants of Cornelius arrived at the place of Peter, God told Peter,   ^“Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.”  Cornelius greeted Peter falling down at his feet to show how much he had been seeking the Lord. Peter took him up; and Cornelius told Peter what happened saying, four days ago he was fasting until that hour; and ninth hour he prayed in his house; and he also reported of the angel he met in a vision. And he was present before God with his household, to hear all things that were commanded Peter of God. They were ready to meet the Lord.

     Then, Peter opened his mouth, and said, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all 🙂 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”(Acts 10:34-43)

       While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then peter commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord; and they were baptized with water right after they were born again of the Spirit. As the Lord Jesus promised to peter to give the keys of the kingdom of heaven when he made a confession of faith to him (Matt. 16:19), Peter used the first key for the Jews to lead them to the kingdom of heaven on the day of Pentecost; and he used the second key to lead the gentiles to the kingdom of heaven this time.

       Peter simply preach the gospel of Christ to the household of Cornelius as Apostle Paul preached saying, “…how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”(1Cor. 15:3, 4)  And the Holy Ghost came upon them all that were present for them to call Jesus the Lord by faith to be saved and born again of the Spirit. This is because Apostle Paul confessed saying, ^“For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”(1Cor. 2:2-5)

       What kind of purpose when you come to the Church on Sunday? Are you sincerely seeking God to hear the word of God? Or, only to attend a ritual service? We have to fear God knowing him that is no respecter of persons, but only accept them that work righteousness. Whosoever comes to church must have the same heart as Cornelius to be blessed by God. Peter remembered Cornelius and his household that received the Holy Ghost, he spoke to the Jews saying,  ^“And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.”(Acts 15:8,9)  Amen! Hallelujah!
