금주의 묵상: 시편 98:1-9

본문: 요한복음 15:1-14

제목: 겟세마네로 가는 길에서 남기신 예수님의 유언(포도나무와 가지들)

     예수께서는 최후 만찬을 끝내시고 마침내 겟세마네로 걸어가시면서 마지막 유언을 말씀하신다. 제자들과 함꼐 걸어가시면서 하신 유언 가운데 첫 번째 유언의 말씀을 듣는다. 예수님 자신은 참 포도나무요, 아버지 하나님은 농부라는 비유를 통해 제자들에게 깨달음을 주시려 하신다. 무엇보다 먼저 알아야할 것은 주님의 말씀의 주제가 구원에 대한 것이 아니라, 구원받은 그리스도인의 열매맺는 삶에 대한 말씀이라는 것을 염두에 두고 들어야할 것이다.

       예수께서 "나는 참 포도나무요"라고 말씀하셨을 때, 이것은 "거짓 포도나무"가 또 있음을 암시하고 있는 것이다. 신명기에 보면 거짓 포도나무가 무엇인지 금방 알 수 있다: "그들의 포도나무는 소돔의 포도나무요, 고모라의 들에서 나온 것이라. 그들의 포도는 쓸개 포도니, 그 송이들은 쓰며 그들의 포도주는 용의 독이요, 독사들의 지독한 독이라."(신 32:32,33) 신명기 32:31에서는 두 가지 서로 다른 "반석"이 언급되고 있다. 성경에서 예수 그리스도를 묘사하면서 "참 빛"(요 1:9)이라든가, "참된 빵"(요 6:32)이라고 말씀하신다.

     주님께서 이 말씀을 하실 때 그때까지는 주님의 몸 된 교회가 나타나지 않았던 때였지만 앞으로 자신이 피흘리시고 죽으시고 부활하신 후 성령께서 오실 때 그분를 믿어그분 안에 들어갈 사람들에 대해 미리 말씀하고 계신 것이다. 또한, 주님 안에서 열매를 맺을 수도 있고 그렇지 못할 수도 있다고 말씀하신다. 또한 열매 맺음도 삼 단계로 말씀하신다. 열매를 맺는 사람, 더 많은 열매를 맺는 사람 그리고 많은 열매맺는 사람으로 말씀하신다. 또한 열매를 맺는 제자는 더 정결케 하시어 더 많은 열매를 맺게 하실 것이며, 열매를 맺지 못하는 그리스도인은 제자로서의 삶을 살지 못함에 대하여 말씀하신다. 그리고 제자들은 이미 주님의 말씀으로 깨끗해졌다고 말씀하신다.

       그들은 이미 깨끗해졌기 때문에 가지가 포도나무에 붙어 있는 것처럼 그분 안에 거할 수 있다는 말씀이다. 주님의 말씀은 병든 곳을 도려내는 칼과도 같은 일을 한다: "하나님의 말씀은 살아있고 활력이 있어 양날이 있는 어떤 칼보다도 예리하여 혼과 영, 그리고 관절과 골수를 찔러 가르고 마음의 생각들과 의도들을 판별하느니라."(히 4:12) 오래전 한 신실한 종이 이런 말씀을 한 적이 있다.  "설교를 듣고 자신이 비참하게 느껴지지 않았다면 당신은 좋은 설교를 들은 것이 아니다." 주님과 더불어 삼년 반이나 함께 생활하며 주님의 말씀을 들은 사람들이 얼마나 깨끗해 졌겠는가? 주님께서는 반드시 "내가 너희에게 일러준 말을 통하여 깨끗해"진 사람들만을 사용하신다. 그러므로 모든 그리스도인들은 하나님의 말씀을 읽고 공부하는 일을 게을리 하지 말아야 하는 것이다. 교회를 열심히 다니는 것을 가볍게 생각하는 사람은 그리스도인으로서의 지극히 기본적인 요건도 제대로 갖추지 못했음을 말해주는 것으로서 이런 사람은 예외 없이 영적으로 단단히 병든 그리스도인인 것이다.

       또한 제자들은 이미 포도나무의 가지들이 되었기 때문에 이미 그들은 주님 안에 거하고 있으니 그대로 그 안에 있으라는 말씀이다. 그래야만 포도나무 가지들처럼 저절로 열매를 맺게될 것이라는 말씀이다. 또한 많은 열매를 맺기 위해서는 포도나무 가지들처럼 계속 주님 안에 거해야 한다고 말씀하신다. 그것은 가지가 스스로 열매를 맺을 수 없고 포도나무에 붙어있어야 저절로 포도열매를 맺는 것과 같다고 말씀하시는 것이다. 그러므로 주님의 제자들은 주님을 떠나서는 아무 것도 할 수 없는 것이다. 또한 주님께서는 기도 응답을 받기 위해서는 우리가 주님 안에 거해야할 뿐만아니라 그분의 말씀들이 우리 안에 거해야 한다고 말씀하신다. 왜 그런가? 주님의 말씀 안에 주님의 뜻이 들어있기 때문이 아닌가? 사도 요한은 "우리가 그 안에서 가지는 담대함은 이것이니, 그의 뜻대로 무엇이든지 구하면 그가 우리를 들으시는 것이라."(요일 5:14)고 증거했다.

               6절의 말씀을 잘못 이해하여 많은 사람들이 다른 복음, 즉 구원을 잃어버린다는 잘못된 교리를 만들어내고 있다. "내 안에 거하지 않는 사람은  가지처럼 버려져 말라 버리느니라. 그러면 사람들이 그것들을 거두어 불 속에 던질 것이요 그것들은 타버릴 것이라."는 말씀이다. 이 말씀을 잘못 이해하여 마치 그리스도인이 그분으로부터 떨어져 나오면 "가지처럼 버려져" 지옥 불에 던져지게 된다는 잘못된 교리가 나온 것이다. 한글만 잘 알아들으면 이 해석이 억지 해석임을 금방 알 수 있을 것이다.

이 구절은 그분 안에 거하지 아니하는 사람(가지가 아닌)은 "가지처럼(as a branch)"이라고 말씀하신다.  

또한, 이 구절은 그분 안에 거하지 아니하는 "사람은"이라고 말씀하지, "그리스도인"이라고 말씀하지 않는다. 그러니까 이 "사람은" 주 예수 그리스도를 거부하고 그분 안에 들어오기를 거부한 사람이다.

그리고 그분 안에 거하지 아니하는 사람은 버려져 그것들을 거두어 불 속에 던지는 것은 "사람들"이 그런다고 말씀하지, "천사들이" 그런다고 말씀하지 않는다.   마태복음 13장에 보면, 세상 끝에 독보리들을 불사르는 추수꾼들이 "천사들"이지, "사람들"이라 말씀하시지 않는다: "인자가 그의 천사들을 앞서 보낼 것이라. 그러면 그들이 실족케 하는 모든 것들과 불법을 행하는 자들을 그의 왕국에서 가려내어 모으리라. 그리하여 그들을 불타는 큰 용광로 속으로 던지리니, 거기서 울며 이를 갈고 있으리라."(마 13:41,42)

       물론 이 말씀을 영적인 관점과 그리스도인의 헌신이라는 관점에서 주님과의 교제에 적용할 수는 있을 것이다. 그리스도인이 주님 안에 거하지 않고 주님의 말씀들이 그 안에 거하지 않음으로 인해 하나님과의 교제가 끊어진 삶을 살게 되면 그 그리스도인은 성령의 열매를 맺지 못하는 말라버린 가지처럼 되어 버려 구원받지 못한 세상 사람들이 그를 짓밟아 버리도록 내던져지게 될 것을  경고하는 말씀으로 이해해야 할 것이다.

       사도 바울은 예수 그리스도의 복음을 믿고 침례받은 사람은 이미 죄로부터 죽은 자들이 되었으며 예수 그리스도 안으로 침례받은 자들이라고 증거했다(롬 6:1-3) 다시 말해서 성령으로 다시 태어나서 새로운 피조물 (고후 5:17)이 되어 그리스도 안에 들어간 사람은 이미 세상으로부터 나와서 하나님의 왕국 안으로 들어간 자들인 것이다. 또한 그 왕국은 성령 안에 있으며, 그 왕국 안에는 의와 화평과 기쁨만 있는 곳이라고 사도 바울이 증거했다 (롬 14:17).

       또한 그리스도인이 주님의 제자가 되기 위해서는 많은 열매를 맺어야 하며 열매를 맺을 때 아버지 하나님께서 영화롭게 되신다는 것이다. 그러므로 사도 바울은 주님 안에 거하는 사람은 성령의 열매를 맺는다고 증거한 것이다: "그러나 성령의 열매는 사랑과 기쁨과 화평과 오래 참음과 친절과 선함과 믿음과 온유와 절제니 그러한 것을 반대할 법이 없느니라. 그리스도께 속한 사람들은 그 육신을 욕정과 정욕과 함께 십자가에 못박았느니라."(갈 5:22-24) 누가 그리스도께 속한 자들인가? 오늘 주님의 말씀처럼 주님 안에 거하는 자가 아니겠는가?

       성령의 열매가 아홉 가지가 있지만 다른 여덟가지는 사랑 안에 다 포함되는 것이다. 그러므로 "성령의 열매들"(복수)이 아니고 "성령의 열매"(단수)로 말씀하고 있는 것이다. 그러므로 주님께서는 주님 안에 계속 거하는 것에 대하여 "너희는 내 사랑 안에 계속 거하라."고 구체적으로 말씀하고 계신 다. 그러므로 누구든지 성령으로 거듭나서 그리스도 안에 들어간 사람은 율법으로부터 해방되어 새 계명 안으로 들어간 자들이다. 사랑하는 자는 모든 율법을 초월한 사람이기  때문이다. 주님 스스로 아버지의 계명들을 지켜서 그분의 사랑 안에 거하는 것같이 모든 그리스도인들은 사랑하라는 계명을 지킴으로써 주님의 사랑 안에 거하게 된다는 것이다. 다시 말해서 서로 사랑하는 자들이 바로 주님 안에 거하는 자들이며 그분의 사랑 안에 거하는 자들이고 그분의 말씀들이 그 안에 거하는 자들이라는 말씀인 것이다.

       또한 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신 것은 "나의 기쁨이 너희 안에 머물러 있어 너희의 기쁨이 충만하게 하려는 것"이라고 말씀하신 것이다. 그렇다! 주 안에 거하는 사람들은 기쁨의 삶을 살 수 있는 것이다. 그러므로 사도 바울은 온갖 박해 속에 살다가 감옥에서 죽음을 목전에 둔 상태에서도 그 기쁨이 충만했던 것이다. 그는 감옥 안에서도 빌립보 교회 성도들에게 "끝으로 나의 형제들아, 주를 기뻐하라. 너희에게 같은 말을 쓰는 것이 내게도 지루하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 너희를 위해서도 안전하니라."(빌 3:1)고 격려할  수 있었다. 사도 바울은 친구이신 주님을 위하여 목숨을 내어놓음으로써 주님의 친구가 되었던 것이다 (요 15:13,14)

        주 예수 그리스도의 죽으심과 부활하심을 믿어 그분을 구세주로 영접하여 그분 안에 들어갔는가? 그렇다면, 지금도 게속 그분 안에 거하는 삶을 살고 있는가? 다시 말해서 그분의 말씀들이 마음 속에 거하고 있음으로 기도 응답을 받고 있는가?  또한 그분의 사랑 안에 거함으로써 많은 열매를 맺고 있는가? 열매는 성령의 열매로 나타나게 되며 결국 전도의 열매로 이어지게 되는 것이다. 지금이야말로 돌이켜 주님의 사랑 안에서 서로 사랑함으로써 많은 열매를 맺어 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 살다가 주님을 영광스럽게 만날 준비를 해야할 때인 것이다. 아멘! 할렐루야!

Meditation of the week: Psalms 98:1-9

Main scripture: John 15:1-14

Subject: Final word of Jesus spoken on the way to Gethsemane (vine tree and branches)

       Jesus is speaking a final word to the disciples walking on the way to Gethsemane. We are hearing the first word of his final words. Jesus is trying to give understanding to his disciples through the parable of true vine tree as Jesus and the husbandman as the Father God.  The theme of his word is to bear fruit, not of salvation itself. When Jesus said, "I am the true vine", he implied of "false vine tree". The book of Deuteronomy explains about the false vine tree:

" For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:

Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps."(Deut. 32:32,33) There mentions about two different Rocks in Deuteronomy 32:31. The scripture describes Jesus as "the true light"(John 1:9) and "the true bread"(John 6:32).

       When Jesus was speaking these words, there was no one that is baptized into him yet; but he was speaking of them that were to believe in him to enter into him when he dies and rise again and the Holy Ghost is to come. Jesus is also saying, the branch in him could bear fruit or not. And every branch that bears fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. And he implies, every branch that bears not fruit, he will take away from discipleship.

     And his disciples were clean the word of Jesus. Because they are clean already, they could abide in him as the branch abides in vine. The word of the Lord acts as the knife that cut off the spot that is in sickness as written in the scripture:

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."(Heb. 4:12) Long time ago, a faithful servant of God gave a word to his disciples saying, "Unless you feel miserable upon hearing sermon, you have not heard good sermon."

How much they that spent with Jesus for three and half years must had been clean through his words? The Lord uses only them that are clean through the word spoken by him. Therefore, Christian must not be lazy for reading and studying the word of God. They that are not sincere for going the church to hear sermons and to study bible must be seriously sick spiritually without exception.

       The disciples already became the branches of the vine to dwell in the vine; and they only had to stay in Jesus. So they could bear fruit of themselves as the branch of the vine bears fruit of itself. And to bring forth much fruit, they had to abide in him continuously as the branches abiding in the vine. Therefore the disciples can do nothing without the Lord Jesus, as we cannot do without him. Jesus said to them how they can receive the answer of prayer saying, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."(John 15:7) Why? There are the will of God in his words. Apostle John testified of this: "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:"(1John 5:14)

         Unfortunately many people misunderstand verse 6 so that they ended up making wrong doctrine of the gospel that cannot secure the salvation: "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned."(John 15:6)

They understand as if Christian shall be cast into the fire of the hell as the withered branch when he is separated from the Lord. It is so easy for us to discern that it is the wrong doctrine, if we understand English well.

       This verse is saying of a man (not a branch)as a branch.

And this verse is saying of a man, not saying of Christian. In other word, this man is the one that rejects to enter into him.

And this verse is saying, men, not angels gather them, and cast them into the fire. Matthews chapter 13 is mention about the angels that burns tares, not men shall do: "The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."(Matt. 13:41,42)

       Of course, we can apply verse 6 to the fellowship with the Lord in the view of spirituality and dedication of Christian. If Christian lose the fellowship with the Lord because of not abiding in him and not abiding the words of the Lord in him, he shall be as a withered branch of the vine not to bear any fruit at all. Then  people in the world shall step on him and cast him out. This could be a spiritual warning for Christian.

       Apostle Paul testified of them that believed on the gospel of Jesus Christ and baptized are dead to sin, and already are baptized into Jesus Christ (Rom. 6:1-3). In other word, they that are born of the Spirit to be new creature (2Cor. 5:17), and entered into the kingdom of God coming out of the world; and the kingdom of God is in the Holy Ghost where are only righteousness, peace and joy (Rom. 14:17).

       And to be the disciple of the Lord, we have to bring forth much fruit. And this is the way to glorify the Father God. Apostle Paul testified of them that abide in the Lord bear the fruit of the Spirit:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts."(Gal. 5:22-24)

Who is the Christ's? As the Lord says in the main passage, they are abide in the Lord.

       There are nine different fruits of the Holy Ghost, but love includes the other eight fruits. Therefore, it is the fruit (singular form) of the Spirit, not fruits(plural form) of the Spirit.

Jesus explains in more details of abiding in him saying, "continue ye in my love." Therefore, whosoever is born of the Spirit to enter into Christ is free from the law to be in the new commandment. They that love are beyond the law. As the Lord has kept his Father's commandments, and abide in his love, we also can abide in his love through keeping  his commandments of love. In other word, they that love one to another are abiding in the Lord as well as abiding in his love; and his words are abiding in them.

        Jesus explains about the reason why he gives these words to the disciples saying, "my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full." Yea! They that abide in the Lord can have joyful life.

Therefore, Apostle Paul was full of joy even in the life of being persecuted, and before death in the prison. And he could be able to encourage the saints of Philippians saying, "Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe."(Phil. 3;1)

Apostle Paul became a friend of the Lord though lay down his life for the Lord (John 15:13,14).

       Are you baptized into the Lord Jesus through believing in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and receiving him as the Lord and Savor? Then, are you continue to abide in him? In other word, are you receiving the answer of prayer through letting his words abide within you? Are you bring forth much fruits through abiding in his love? The fruit of the Spirit is supposed to be connected to the fruit of evangelism. It is the right time for us to abide in his love, if not yet to glorify the Father God through bringing forth much fruits preparing the glorious meeting with the Lord. Amen! hallelujah!
